  2. Funny, my dad 72 goes crazy if he hears someone call it an emergency brake. He says he never heard anyone call it an emergency brake until about 20 years ago.

  4. I hate "roll Pan". Sounds like a cookie sheet. It is a rolled pan, kiddies.

  5. English lesson aside, I did my time behind the parts counter at dealerships. In no book or microfische was the item in question ever referred to as anything but a wheel. Disassemble a motorcycle wheel and you are left with a hub, a bunch of spokes, nipples and a rim. Does a car have a steering rim or a fly rim? By your definition, a wheel must contact the ground. I guess metal crafters use English rims

The Cigarette lighter is now "the power outlet". Whew, lucky for all the manufacturers on that one!
Altho there is the issue of the ashtray, gone missing.
And vent windows come to think too.

    Emergency Brake

    Hello,

There are plenty of mis-named parts and actions in the automotive world. It is just central to everyone as the time periods changed wording like a wild fire spreading in the forest. If it fit the immediate time period, then it got used again and again. Now, that terminology, whether it was correct or not kept getting used over and over. For that person or family, that was the way it was going to be pronounced, right or wrong.

And emergency brake is just that. An emergency handle to lock the rear brakes so the car does not move forward or back. If the transmission does not work well or if the stick shift lever pops out of any gear, "The Emergency Brake" hinders any movement forward or backward. For the sake of our cars not needing an emergency (factory lawyers), the name was changed to parking brake. When we stop at a curb or parking space, we park, therefore we used the parking brake to keep the car in its place.

Our society has gotten lawyer-defined crazy to make things say what they say as a description. Since we park our cars and for the most part not have any emergencies, why call it the emergency brake?

    Jnaki

It was the same thing as roll bars in our hot rods and drag race vehicles. It was for an emergency and helped in an accident. But for our ordinary daily drivers, the cars were not supposed to roll over and need any kind of “roll over” protection. So, those factory roll bars, became head rests, as we do rest our heads. It is all in the wording and description that the factory car manufacturer’s lawyers kept the wording in place to describe our accessories and safety equipment.

So, as described above, it is the time period, mis-used family situations and factory supported lawyers terms to make sure we weren’t driving dangerous vehicles that could have an emergency or need a roll bar.

Many lives have been saved with roll bars and emergency brakes. They were useful in emergencies, which we all have or had in our lifetime of driving hot rods or just plain old automobiles. YRMV

Don't forget, Dome can be a noun or a verb. May not be a misnomer, depending on how you look at it.

"noun or verb", I herd those terms somewhere in my 62 year past. Never seemed to learned what they were then and still don't know what they are now!

The indicators are what are in the dash. So, they are turn signal indicators.
