That toolbox looks like it has been around for a bit.

 

Dad bought it for me in 1974

 

When they decided to add on to the building (a public high school built in the 50s) a few years back, to have enough room they had to put the soccer/lacrosse field and the parking lot in the same spot. There's artificial turf on the roof of the garage! It's probably a pain in the ass to go chase the ball every time someone kicks it off the roof.

 

i got the hip roof craftsman i keep in the trunk of the 46 around the same time from my brother in law, payment for not messing with his 1960 porsche while he was getting his masters down at ball state.

 

Jim are you up for looking at some more engine stamps on a C1 62?

found this topic yesterday. read all of it. squirrel... You're one of the good guys that really makes this hobby great.

hopefully some day i can afford another corvette. my favorite is '56-57. had a 56 greatly abused vette that i bought from a dealer on Whittier Blvd in 1973. $200 with pink. no engine/ trans nor top. got it running with a 59 vette motor and t10. shudda kept it. sold it when I moved to Arizona in 74. that was after i abused it even more. another dealer from Salt Lake City bought it after I drove it through Knott's Berry farm parking area after a car show. it still looked like crap but damn... it sounded so good through the headers and the big hemi mufflers.

 

You have a highly desireable block! Fuelie with a high lift cam!!! That's if it has a '62 casting date, or even a late '61casting date!
Built at the Flint plant on January 12, 1962! RF suffix is a 360 hp, M/T, high lift designation.

Based on the front motor mount and bolt seems probable from the photo that this engine is in a first generation Corvette. Likely not an orphan. Is it in the car it was born with?

 

The last F looks kind of suspicious....like it might have been messed with. If it has been redone, it's a pretty decent restamp. If it's real, then it's the 360 HP engine, and if the partial VIN matches the car it's in, makes the car worth a lot more. So you have to be pretty careful...there are guys who are pretty good at figuring out if it's an original stamp or not, but beware there is a lot of fakery going on. I'm not good enough to tell if it's real or fake.

 

It looks to me like it has the original deck machining lines, but after looking close at that last F you're right it's not only slightly different but also sits higher. Could someone along the line have added the F to an R suffix? It would still be a 1962 327.

 

GOOD EYE'S, Gentelmen!!! If the last "F" is fake, and added, that would make it a 250 hp, M/T passenger car engine

 

Upon further review, that last "F" looks fake. Starting to look more like a 250/327 w-M/T. Oop's... My Bad...

 

These characters aren't stamped with the same stamps, like a typewriter. In my somewhat limited experience in production machining, we loaded a stamp holder with the part number we were making and stamped them all at once by hitting the stamp holder with a big lead hammer. All the individual stamps did not necessarily match exactly and some were duller than others. I'm not saying if this one is legit or not, just passing along some info.

Yeah, they're not perfect, but an original stamp is pretty darn consistent from one end to the other. This is the stamp on mine, it's the low perf engine, so it's not one that anyone would bother forging.

The last letter has the same depth and size as the rest of the characters.

 

If you stare at Jim’s stamp it looks like the letters are raised.

 

It's a neat optical delusion
