Thanks i'm pretty pleased with them, i will answer your question how it was done here as a couple of others asked too.

Firstly i had the covers media blasted and then chromed, only the highlighted area's were polished.

Then i lightly scuffed the chrome up where they would be painted.

Then 2 coats of Epoxy primer were sprayed on and allowed to flash off for 10mins, then i carefully used a thinners rag to wipe away the primer from the highlighted area's and allowed the epoxy to dry.

Then i sprayed on the copper base colour and again wiped off the highlighted area's and allowed the base coats to dry for 30mins (basecoat dries quick)

Then 2 coats of copper flake were applied and again the highlighted area's were wiped with a clean thinners rag.

Finally 3 clearcoats went on with again the highlights wiped between each coat. It takes a while but i think the time invested is worth the results.
    Hope this helps.

The same process was used on my 32 rocker covers and brake drums, These parts were aluminium so were just polished first.

Question, can you flake the motor and will it hold up?
How many coats is too much. What would be the process to where it will hold up?

Yes i've flaked a few now, the process i use is as follows.

Remove all old paint and get the block perfectly clean.
Degrease the block and apply 2 coats of Epoxy primer, wait 1hr to allow it to dry, apply 2 basecoats and let flash off, then apply 1 or 2 flake coats, let these dry for a good 8 hrs and then apply 2 full clear coats.

    Here's my Olds block done

How long have they held up(fadeing)? Does it make it run hotter with all that paint on it?

  7. I'd think it'd peel before fading. Especially around the exhaust area of the heads

Running bown bbc, around 650 hp, proabley gonna run a little warm, if it holds up for a couple of years of average cruising would be happy.

This one hasn't been run that much yet as its not roadster weather here :( but others i have done have been fine, no increase in running temp, done my T 10 years ago and it was still perfect when i recently sold it, no fading anywhere.
The only engine i ever had burn off on was an FE and it used to burn at the ends of the head exhaust ports.

It might or might not be the Olds.;)

Howard Gribble's collection has provided endless inspiration, but my build era is slightly later than his pics. Think LRM and Qvo late 70's.

Donnie is not doing this car.

What paint gun are you guys using for the heavy flake? What tip sizes tend to work better?

I have seen several different kinds out there. With and without agitators , but have no idea which one to go with. Hate to drop the coin on it to find out I should have bought a different one.

Any equipment advice would be appreciated.

i used a acuspray set up from sherwin williams.its a syphon fed gun.it come with a twin or 4 turbine "compresser"the gun is fed the air through a 3/4" hose at 5-9 psi.i can spray latex block filler through it without thinning.the tips can be bigger than a #2 pencil lead.

    Thanks!

I like to use Z-Chrome rust defender and it is so thick I have to thin the snot out of it to get it to pass through my guns. Never thought about using the agitator guns to spray it.

Gonna look into the acuspray setup.

I use a 1.6 for mini flake going up to a 2.5 for the really big stuff, all laid on at around 20-30psi to stop the flake bouncing. I use a couple of ball bearings to keep the flake suspended and give the gun a shake after each pass.

Does the bike have something to do w/ the Gasoline Alley crew? or its just
"tribute" graphics. Eitherway a truly bitchin ride that i'd love to own!
