The only thing I can make with a block of wood and a knife is a mess on the floor.
That's going to be nice when it's finished.

I'm in the process of installing an AOD transmission in my 56 Merc Monterey Wagon. It would be a great honor to have this or a copy of this icon on the the floor shifter

Cheers for the comments everyone. Mercury Charlie is a legend and I love the shift handle he had done. He was one of the reason for this one being made. Just wanting to try something different . I plan on doing all the knobs on the dash in timber . 318124428_2339779252853340_2036658284650286265_n.jpg

Marcus put a lot of though into the wings because I will be using the lokar shifter adaptor and will be pushing down frequently (its a auto) . I was told what the wood was but forget will find out. Have add a photo of the artist Marcus Thorn 318028921_2339779309520001_1928752335825829021_n.jpg

  19. That shift knob is too kool! The artist’s Buick is pretty kool too!

  20. Way too cool !!!

do you have a pic of the “ button” on the lokar shifter ?

    love it !

how are you going to finish it ? Paint ? Stain ? Greasy hands and age ?

  21. The lack of the button/depress thing is another reason why I prefer Genie. With Genie you just screw the knob on and go. But I've lost track of whether you can or can't still get them.

  22. Gennie and Lokar both supply "no button" adapters for their button-style shifters so you can run a buttonless knob of your choice. I always have a couple on hand as a convenience for my Lokar and Gennie customers who want a no-button, custom knob.
Both work the same. They have some cosmetic differences, but otherwise the same.
The adapters mount on the shift levers below the knob and have a short 3/8" stud for the buttonless knob to thread on. The adapter "plunges" up and down a fraction of an inch instead of an inset button on the knob top plunging up and down. The new, buttonless knob is attached to the adapter so it will bob up and down with the adapter to get get it out of the lockout feature of reverse and park gears. They are new car trim quality and don't look cheesy or hacked.
EDIT: The first sentence I posted above is not entirely correct. In post #28 below I have some corrected info.

  23. Maybe I'm old, but I've never seen a Gennie with a button.
I only know the gate function. It's been a while.

  28. You, Sir, are correct.
I went to the Gennie site to double check and their shifter is like you said; it has a couple of zigs and zags like a "gated" shifter and no buttons. What confused me is that Gennie does sell an adapter very similar to the Lokar adapter. But apparently, the only reason they make and sell them is on the off chance that someone may wish to put a Gennie knob on a Lokar shifter. The weird thing is the Lokar adapter will take a Gennie knob so it's not like you can only use a Gennie adapter for a Gennie knob.
Anyhow, when I posted above, my recall was a bit cloudy on the details. I probably had a clearer grasp of the details years ago when I first researched it but I have so many holes in my head stuff can leak out.
To make the 'button/no button' options even more screwy, there is a third, Brand X, competitor (American Shifter). With Brand X the basic shifter has a button like the Lokar....... but you can use the Lokar or the Gennie adapter if you want a buttonless knob. Now, stay with me on the next couple of curves....... but Brand X offers an adapter. But it doesn't mount on the top of the shift lever like the Gennie or Lokar. It mounts at the bottom of the shift lever at the pivot point. So with that setup, you pull the knob and shifter sideways towards your thigh to get passed the various detents going backward and forward through the gear positions. I think Bran X calls it a "dual pattern" because you can go either way or both ways on that shifter.
With all the above shifter options, you can't see the gear positions like on a gated shifter. You have to "feel" and pay attention to the detents to know what gear the shift lever is in. You get accustomed to it and it's no big deal. There are a few other details that I won't get into here regarding fine versus course thread and solid versus hollow levers.
