I purchased a 1950 mercury but the rear axles are gone. My question is are 1950 ford axles the same?

I am pretty sure they are different. Merc and Ford have different bolt patterns to begin with. A Merc will have the typical early 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern as opposed to Ford of that vintage with 5 on 4 1/2. Widths may be similar. I am quite a distance from you, but might know of something here locally. Not sure of price and shipping might be a little rough..

As far as I know the mercury came with a Dana 44 and is different than the 1949-56 ford car rear. I believe 1950's Ford trucks came with Dana 44's but the axle lengths may be different.

I think I'd be checking out the rest of the rear end before hunting axles. Check the ring and pinion to make sure that they are in good shape and take an inventory of what it will take besides a pair of axles to get it back together right. You might find that it is a lot more prudent to swap out rear ends unless you are hung up on running the original rear end.

My interchange book doesn't go back that far so I can't check on that one but maybe someone has an older book and will speak up.

heres my problem I have this 50 merc in a junk yard and need rear axles or install a tube through the rear end and bolt wheels on it to make it a roller. I'am thinking a tube inside a tube. Start with 1.50 dia should go through the rear end and then use what ever size fits inside 1.50. Weld a flange on each end and bolt wheels to that. This way I can adjust to the wheel base by adjusting the tubes inside each other.

  7. Merc and Ford axles do NOT interchange. The Wizzard

  8. even if both axles are out , i don't believe that a tube will go all the way through from one side to the other of the rear end

Old thread, I know, but the search came up with this one. I have a 1950 rear end Dana 44 5x5.5 bp that came with my '48 F1 uninstalled. It has the pickup spring pads on it, but it also has the remnants of another set of spring pads underneath. So my questions are:

    1. What is the overall housing width of the '50 Merc rear end?
    2. What is the spring pad width on a '50 Merc rear end?

48 to 52 F1, and 49 to 51 Merc use the same axles.

Thanks! The PO for this '48 F1 had a '76 9" under it, and had an "extra" rear on the back. Was it the original? no. It has 6-21-50R on the Dana 44 for date code, and the rebuilt 8BA v8 has a car pan on it, so I'm thinking he could have used leftover parts from a custom 50/51 Merc. I'll never know for sure, I s'pose. The engine is dated January 16th, 1951.

49 to 51 Ford woody axles will fit too, but have a 4 1/2" bolt pattern.
