I have found a mcculloch supercharger that came off a 1940 ford coupe in the mid 70s. I am goin to look at it tommorow ir thursday and want to know what i need to look for as in things wrong or broke or that would make it unusable. the guy says it spins but seems like it may need oil since it has been in his garage since 1975. he has the crank pulley and the tensioner also and maybe more parts for it. does these superchargers have bearings? can they be rebuilt if supercharger is bad? all info would be greatly appreaciated Posted from Jalopyjournal.com App for Android
The pully and tensioner are hard to find. It's good that it has that. Make sure those are in good condition
There is a planetary drive with 5 big steel ball bearings. There is also the impeller which can get worn by dirty air, and the bearings of the impeller etc. All parts are available, you might count on sending it to John Erb in Denver for a rebuild.
Make sure it spin freely. I would have Mr Erb rebuild it he is out of Las Vegas 1-775-883-6994 the best!
I assume that you are looking at the prewar McCulloch supercharger. The most important items are the drive gears. If they are not good you will possibly have a problem. Replacement gears are very "few and far between". I suggest you open up the gear housing and inspect the gears. If water got in there may be a problem. It is easy to open up the drive area. If the bushings are bad you can have new ones installed. The front bearing is a ball bearing that can easily be replaced. If the supercharger is a 1937 to 1940 model it should have the manifold attached. Those superchargers do not yield much improvement in performance but they do look neat.
