I have a friend who is finishing up a Model A speedster with a B engine. Internally, it seems to be hotter than he realized, which makes his stock distributor seem pretty inadequate. He's looking for a good ignition upgrade for street use, but the catch is that his car is still running six volts.

Best I could come up with was the Scalded Dog front-mount VW conversion and to run a magneto--any other suggestions that don't involve re-wiring the car for 12 volts?

  14. Bubba's Mallory conversions, FSI distributer (which is made by Mel Mallory), Old dual point Mallory, rebuild a B dizzy, WICO mag.....
    Many choices

  15. I'd make damn sure the B distributor is at fault. From what I have heard, it should do the job.

But are they all compatible with the 6V system? Bubba's, for instance, would be my personal first choice, but I was under the impression it's intended for 12 volts.

I think it has a Model A distributor currently.

  17. What would the difference be? I run "modern" points and condensers in my stock A dizzy. They are from a 68 Ford which is a 12 volt car and they do just fine on 6 volts. A flamethrower coil and a Stipe distributor cam really woke my car up

  20. Most points style ignitions step the voltage down to 6 Volts so as not to burn up the points.

FYI Pertronics (FS) ignition will burn up the module if you leave the ignition on without the engine running. I do believe they come 6 and 12 Volt.

  22. then why do they use Ballast resistors to step down the voltage?

  23. B has centrifugal advance. Be a big help and look more stock if that is what he is going for.

  24. changing gears, is there a big difference in performance between a winfield updraft and the same model set up for a downdraft?

what I have been told is that the Winfield up draft is much better than the stock set up

  26. but how does it compare to the same carb with a downdraft setup. I would assume the downdraft is better, but by a lot?

I really don't know , but as you I would think the down draft is better

  28. WICO MAG!!!!! Once You go with a good mag,(set up right) you will never go back to anything else!!!!!
I did try the other, but broke down within 10 miles! (Stuck on a back road!) I put the mag in and never even considered anything else! Just so you all know. (I did run a coil wire) LOL.... Maybe I just got a bad one?
The Wico looks like it belongs there anyways!:D[IMG]

Turns out I was wrong, he does have a B distributor already, so we'll work with that for the time being.

    Thanks for everyone's input!

  30. You might put it on a machine and test it. I have read they tend to advance to late and not enough. I don't have any experience though, just what I've read.

    And Joe
