I just bought a 40 ford convert that has a 10 bolt in it. it doesn't look right and fit right. I have a maverick 8 inch 56.50 drum to drum that I am going to use and I am looking for ideas on what size 15 wheel and back space to use and also what size tire. I always use a 66 bronco 9 inch or Granada 8 inch that is 58 drum to drum and a 15 x6 wheel with 3 1/2 back space and a 225 75 15 tire with 48 merc caps. everything sets in nice with that combo but I need ideas with the maverick rear. my black coupe has the 66 bronco rear and my sahara tan convert has the 10 bolt that is coming out.
I have a maverick 8" in my cabrio with adapters for the old steelies and it is just the right width. I assume your '40 is somewhat wider so I don't know if the width is going to be an issue or not. I guess with correct offset it will work. Tim
I installed an 8" Maverick in my old 40 coupe - ran 15"x8" Chrysler rims out back with 4" backspace. Had to run a 3/4-1" spacer on each side or they rubbed on the inside. I am presently building a 40 pickup with a 66 Mustang rear with the same rear rims. Looks like they will be perfect as I believe the 66 Mustang rear is about 2" wider.
I just bought a Maverick rear for my 38 sedan and will pay close attention to this thread.. I want to also run 6" rims in back.. I figure at worst I'll have to run a reversed rim...
Tom, '65-'66 Mustang is 57.25", half way between the Mav and early Bronco/Granada. K6 Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Maverick rear is same width as 57-59 Ford. I think a 66-67 Fairlane rear might be better suited for width, about 2" wider.
I use the Ford SW which is similar at 57 1/4". I run 235 x 70 x 15 on 15 x 7 with a 3 1/2" back space. I have tried the 15 x 8 but they hit the inner fender wheels. Here is the photo with the 15 x 8 wheels and 235 x 75 x 15 Michelin tires. Look good but hit when turning corners.
thanks for the info. I just measured my rear and it is 57.5 wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface
Kinky6 - long time no hear - how are you and the boys? Looking forward to making a visit again once this 5-window I am building is done. Need some of that good BBQ we had that night! All the best, TomT
Actually, they are not the same width. The Maverick at 56 1/2" is a bit narrower.......about an inch +/-. Ray
I have a 1940 Ford coupe & had a 9" Ford rear narrowed to 56 1/2 " I'm currently running smoothies 7" wide 4" back spacing 275 70 15's I needed to use 1/2 spacers to keep them from rubbing inside but I also have the option of running the same tire on a American racing torque thrust D which has 3 5/8" back spacing without spacers & will put the tires & wheels where I want them
Maybe this will help someone. My stock 40 Ford rear measure 59 1/2 inches from WMS to WMS. On the rear I am running 15x6 rims with 4 inch back spacing on the rims. Tires are 7:60 x 15 BF Goodrich Silvertown. Dia. of tire is 28.66 in with 7.9 inch section width.
Use the 56-1/2" rear end and you'll hate yourself when it comes to fitting wheels and tires. Go with a rear end that's 58" and save the headaches for something else.
Yup, please stay focused on the question at hand...what you used in your Model A, '34, or '55 is off topic by the criterion established by the original poster...
