Sorry to hear that, at some point it would have been easier to get the raw castings and chase machining.

Well i got the rebuilt 81's all set up yesterday on my new setup. Rebuilt motor, 330 cam, roof head, lightened flywheel, stock size riley pully, FS points distributor, headers, no mufflers and only bug domes. The thing spits up through the carburetors, really hard too. Timing is good and ive checked it and the firing order a bunch. Distributor came off my old runnning motor.

It only backfires if i give it too quick of throttle, but if i stomp on it doesnt.
Thinking i need bigger carbs anyways but I would think the 81's wouldnt have this problem. Accelerator pumps dont put out much with just the 1/4 burst and it does get better when its warm. I also jetted them at 36 but with stock power valves.

Other than that it runs great.

    What do you guys think?
Carbs too small make it backfire?
If it was a valve hanging open it would do it all the time right?

typically what you are describing is a lean condition
it is a balancing act between accelerator pump, jetting and temp
do you have a thermostat installed? may help heat up the motor quicker
I have the same issue, I tune for motor at full temp ~190 and use lots of patience when colder

    Burl,

If it doesn't work, ship it to me for testing, I should be able to evaluate for about 7 to 8 months...........

Ya I’m pretty sure it’s lean condition. Wouldn’t think the smaller carb would be as finicky about it. I figured the velocity of the air would help it transition better but that’s also making it colder.

JYK- does it do better if you richen the idle screws a little? Sometimes I've found that will help transition to open throttle a little better. Just my .02

ACCELELATOR PUMP LINK- adjustable Stromberg 3-1/4 to 4 inches 1934-38

Accelerator Pump rod, adjustable from 3 inches to 4 inches. Stainless steel threaded rod with machined brass ends. For the Stromberg carburetors. 211A P. 441

Maybe a little more length on the pump stroke. A little pricey $ 30.00 each. Gary

You might want to read about tuning with a vacuum gauge. In the frist post each month there is a listing of links that are very helpful. There is a very good link listed there about vacuum gauge tuning.

    Give it a read.

Im all about the vacuum gauge. Current set up doesnt have a vacuum port though, next time i have the manifold off ill tap one.

I isolated it to the front carb. Doesnt put out a shot of fuel to half throttle. With the carbs disconnected it only back fires when i open the front carb. I rebuilt the carb and cleaned all passages and its a new acel pump. Even tried another power valve. Guess i gotta pull the little squirter tubes. Sure seemed like they flowed good. But ill have to check to make sure.

Swap carbs, front to rear and rear to front and see if the problem follows the carb.

It turns out it was the accelerator pumps where locking up. An old one I got works great, had to sand down most of the purple on the other one. Not sure why this happened.
