Hot Rods Mallory Magspark Coil Autopsy

I took this old non-functioning Mallory Coil apart and thought some might be interested in seeing the carnage.

The oil around the coils is very clear and runny. The wire on the small long coil (primary?) is thin but like gauge 16 or 18. It’s wrapped around what I thought it was a solid metal bar but turned out to be like 30 very thin plates stuck together by the oil. The (secondary?) outer coil looks like a bunch of wet cardboard or wax paper rolled tightly , and I cut it open on the bandsaw. The wire here is in layers and it’s like hair thin. This is going to sound dumb but what are you going to do with the housing?

 

I kept it for display. It was in the hotrod for like 20 years so holding on to it.
