I just bought a set of Air Force seats for my Dodge truck and want to make a cushion for the bottom. I have looked at the foam and was wondering what thickness gives a decent level of comfort? thanks, Joe
Foam comes in different densitys, go sit on different thicknesses and kinds of foam and see which feels best on your butt.
Go to a junkyard and grab some foam out of a car with bucket seats. Cut them down to fit your seats. Engineers have spent many years perfecting the foam for the automobile industry.
I go a store called the foam lady. She sells only foam . Customs cuts it ,forms it. I go there and pick my density and a pattern. She cuts it out and I go home and cover it.
Check out Aircraft Spruce. They sell foam for aircraft seats, or at least when I was researching for it, a NASA foam developed for aerospace purposes. I guess it would work on earth, too. You know in the seats you have they sat on parachutes. Looks like the boxy doodad might be hard on the spine.
Firm foam would be good. Layers of cotton batting better. If you picked up an old bomber seat pad it would be heavy and dense, not light and squishy.....
I've done several bomber buckets and 1 bench and I've used 3 inch firm foam with 4 inch at the front for a nice front roll. They've been very comfortable. I've also made 3/4 thick back cushions but never use them.
I see you have a dual cup holder in the making, too. You may need some weight in the bed to hold down the back of yer truck....... Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thanks for all of the help, my wife wanted some stupid seats like out of a car. The console will have a cover to match the skimpy little bikini pads on the seat bottom.
If you really want a cheap way out go to Home depot or Lowes and in the garden dept the outdoor furniture cushions just happens to fit bomber seats . Put some in my old Morris Minor with Rotten Leonard seats
