You know, it is pretty amazing how easy he pulled that deal off. I went to his Auction Listings and saw where he had 721 auctions going at one time. Assuming he never made good on any from that batch, --and assuming he "captured" an average of $250.00 per each auction (remember freight added to selling price), that equals about $180K. Now here is where many probably got taken even more  . In all liklihood the winning bidder asked if he could sell them more than one for the bid price and you know he probably obliged! Thus it is very believable that (t)he(y) netted about a quarter of a million dollars in one swoop. $250K in cash can hide you out in a 3rd world country for a long time --especially if it allows you the funding to go into some other enterprise. (drugs, gun smuggling, terrorism, etc.)

What ARE the chances they will ever catch them? Imagine the stress of all of those buyers who bought those IPods for a child or a spouse ...and then had to scramble at the last minute to find something to replace it with --that is if they had enough money left-over to afford an alternate gift. Truly sad!

it really sucks that so many people got ripped off. and yet the strange thing to me is, prior to early to mid december, he's got more or less above average to great feedback. i wonder if all this stuff is purely circumstantial. won't those people feel bad when they hear he's dropped dead or something...

People have been steeling or highjaking other peoples ebay acounts. I dont think that this guy did all the work to get a good ebay feed back I think he stoled it. Most of these people dont even live in the usa so they cant be proscuted even if they were cought.

Oh, I think the man and women did premeditate it --AND they did live in the USA. Maybe they got sloppy --or maybe they don't care and fled with their new fortune.

They had a bank account so someone had to show some form of ID to open the account. Now do you suppose it was forged? They had an apartment in Naples, Florida as there is witness to their "empty apartment" and a contact number for the Naples Police Dept.

The feedback was started in December 13, of 2003 so they have had a chance to build on this. And as big as eBay is, it is very possible that the same thing happened on another eBay User's auction and we just don't know about it yet. But honestly, how could any of the victims known prior to bidding? It was just a chance I suppose, and the classified here have not been w/o problems either!

So just "how much" of a head start did this man & woman get before the authorities were notified and actually started investigating? There are several websites already gathering info. Here's one ... and this one ...and there are others.

The info on the couple is:
    Alisher Mardonov / Shahnoza Khakimova
    1765 Courtward Way # 205
    Naples Florida 34112
    (239)- 682-0599

When I was in college, one of the kids working on the student newspaper with us was from Malaysia. They give credit cards out to college studens like they're Gatorade samples. He got a bunch of them, and then right before he graduated, he maxed all of them out on expensive electronic equipment, clothes, music, anything he wanted. In 1995, 10grand or more would buy a college student just about anything in the world.
He shipped it all back home to Malaysia, then graduated and went back home.

These people are probably back "home" as well. They're off the map, and won't be found in this country.

  15. If it was circumstantial, he could have just ended the auctions and cancelled all bids. Unless the circumstance was being a theiving asshole...

You notice he quit taking paypal - you can only pay him via methods where you have no recourse for being cornholed.

I've sold a bunch of stuff over ebay and ALWAYS tried to describe things honestly. I've sucked it up when shipping was over what I'd quoted, and generally bent over backwards to ensure that I didn't fuck anyone. I know somebody's gonna' say I fucked 'em on ebay someday, but I sure as heck don't want them to be telling the truth when they say it!

I hope this guy gets WENZELED, tried & convicted, then thrown in cell block H and passed around like a peace pipe.

Oh, yeah, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Lemmeee see now...PT Barnum once said: "There's a sucker born every minute."

An unknown person said: "If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...it is a duck."

An another said: "If it sounds too good to be TRUE, it probably is (a scam)."

It amazes me these days how many people want something for nothing...and are willing to spend their hard-earned cash for "pie in the sky." Each and everyone of those people that got scammed fall into all three of the categories above...

Skepticism rules...and how does that old line the police use go: "Just say NO!!!"

'Prairie Home Companion' to Stay in Minn.

By STEVE KARNOWSKI, Associated Press Writer

[IMG]Garrison Keillor is shown in New York on Dec. ...

MINNEAPOLIS - Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" won't be permanently leaving its St. Paul home after all.

The humorist said he expects to do about a dozen shows during the 2006-07 season from the Fitzgerald Theater, the longtime base of the public radio program.

The rest of the season's shows will air from the road, including a return to the Minnesota State Fair, he said.

Keillor said last month that the show was looking for a new home.

But in the end, he said, it was an impulsive decision to stay at the Fitzgerald, based partly on people he met at coffee shops or parties.

"They said it would be terrible if the show were not in St. Paul," Keillor told The Associated Press on Thursday. "I listen to people who tug at my sleeve."

The program had been in negotiations to do its coming New Year's Eve show in New York, he said, but that became too complicated. A deal to hold it at the Fitzgerald was worked out in 25 minutes. "The point was not lost on me," he said.

St. Paul has been the show's permanent home since 1992, when Keillor returned from a five-year absence. "Prairie Home" started broadcasting from the Fitzgerald, then known as the World, in 1978.

Ohh come on 40RudeDude ...err StudeDude. Nothing in any of those auctions remotely even threw up a flag like what you just stated. Only a rude & ignorant person would publically make those kind of remarks w/o remorse. That Seller had over 300 positive feedbacks when he ran all of those auctions with 99+% Positive Feedback rating prior to running his final auction batch. How close is that to your feedback?

None of those people were suckers. They were innocently bidding on a liar's auction. The description(s) was realistic and so were the prices. The Buyers did their homework including trusting eBay's PowerSeller bonding. There are WAY more too-good-to-be-true type stories posted here on H.A.M.B. --and realistic items sold on eBay for that comment to even be remotely true. I guess that same logic applies to items sold on H.A.M.B. Classifieds too huh??

And finally, all the people in the world would be labeled as Pessemists and nothing would ever get done if they used your ideological "Just Say No" advise! Keep replying like this so we can all see just how close to the same type of human speciman as this eBay Seller is.

  19. Consider the risks, don’t just pay without a little homework. I’ve been buying on eBay for several years. I haven’t got ripped off, (yet). Never send a personal check to a stranger, because the crooks now have your bank account number. The only way I ever pay is with Postal Money Order. If they won’t take that, I don’t bid. I check the feedback. If there is only buyer feedback, indicating that this seller doesn’t buy anything on eBay, only sells, then I always query the seller if I can pick the item up and pay with cash if I am the high bidder. It’s my guess that honest sellers will always say yes. If I don’t get a yes, or don’t get any reply at all, I just don’t bid.

After I have won an item I send an email to the seller, before paying, asking for name, address, phone number. If I can’t get an answer back from the seller in 2 days I send another inquiry. No answer in 6 days, I cancel my bid. In over 200 items last year, I only canceled 2 bids. On one of them they complained. I answered that if he had cared enough to answer my questions, he could have made the sale. On the other I never got any complaint or reply from the seller; then, I filed a “suspected fraud” report to eBay, just to teach him that he should answer questions from bidders. To busy? They can go fuck themselves.

When I get the seller’s name, address, and phone number, On items over $20 I make a phone call. Then, I explain that I have decided to send a Postal money order instead of picking the item up.

Two weeks ago. I was high bidder on a set of wheels and tires, over $300. On the high dollar items like that I go to the trouble of making a second phone call, asking if the item could be sent collect, by Greyhound bus. He had to make an unnecessary trip to the bus station, but he did it. Then I called the bus station and discussed the deal with the agent. When I got a call-back from the guy selling me the wheels and tires explaining that they wouldn’t send them collect without a business account number, (I already knew that), I was getting good vibes, felt confident that I would be safe to send the money order to his home address. It’s amazing how that caller ID works! By this time, after 3 phone calls, I knew his work hours. If a seller has a day job, then that's another good sign. Then, on the way to the post office, I called his home number one more time and talked to his wife just before dropping the money order in the mail.

Actually, that’s not a lot of work to grease the skids on a $300 deal. Besides, I don’t have to go 600 miles to bust his legs if he don’t send me the wheels and tires.

They bit...that makes every one of them "suckers."

So. Brent in 10-uh-C...I now understand you, too, were one of those that got scammed?

    Yep. I knew that'd get someone's goat...and I'll reply this once more...so, 10-uh-C, do your best comparison...

And tell me EXACTLY...what does any of this ebay crap, making thousands or Garrison Keillor have to do with traditional hot rods on this forum? Not a damned thing!

    Here are some truths.
Ebay is huge. There are bad people everywhere. For every one of these stories there are hundreds of thousands of good transactions. If you dont like it/dont use it.

Pack of Angry Chihuahuas Attack Officer

    By Associated Press

FREMONT, Calif. - A pack of angry Chihuahuas attacked a police officer who was escorting a teenager home after a traffic stop, authorities said.

The officer suffered minor injuries, including bites to his ankle, Detective Bill Veteran said.

The five Chihuahuas escaped the 17-year-old boy's home and rushed the officer in the doorway Thursday, authorities said. The teenager had been detained after the traffic incident.

The officer was treated at a hospital and returned to work less than two hours later.

You can NEVER be too careful on Ebay. I ask questions on nearly every item I bid on. If the seller cannot provide COMPLETE answers that's my first clue to AVOID them - no matter how killer the part is.

The next thing to check is the sellers OTHER ITEMS. Seeing a seller suddenly CHANGE his selling style is a HUGE INDICATIOR that somethings up. AS in this case guy had 300+ feedbacks then suddenly has several hundred items fo rsale with in a week??!!!?? Imagine how much work it would be to process that much merchandise - IF you actually intened to do it. Next question to ask yourself - WHO gets 10 bizzilion items to sell all at once???? ALL RED FLAGS!!! Same with 3 day auctions - RED FLAG CITY!!!!

The thing with Ebay is that SCAMMERS will always be abound - Ebay has really very little interst other than making token efforts - so long as they get paid they could care less about YOU!! So bottom line - you gotta do your homework. And while there's STILL no guarantee - you'll definitely reduce your chances of getting burned.

Ask questions!!!!!!! First sign of anything that's not right - run!!! There's ALWAYS another deal around the corner - be patient.

This guy (rip off artist) was fairly sharp - but there were more than enough clues to avoid him IF the people knew where to look. Does that make them deserving of the screwing they got?? Hell no!!!!!!! But hopefully they will use this to learn to be more diligent on their next purchase. And maybe the rest of us can learn a lesson too. I know I will be THAT much more careful.....

Just had my 7th year anniversary as an eBay member and the GREAT deals far out weigh stories like this. Sure these people got ripped off, but they are also DUMB, real DUMB to not read the sellers feedback before bidding. Not all bidders live next door to a postoffice, so a personal check is fine. Anyone in Kansas want to tell us how close your post office is? I've found that $20.00-$40.00 auctions move well, everyone has an online rish level I believe, the bidders in the auctions we're talking about were spending $200.00 without checking feedback, rich yuppies? Who knows? There are all types on eBay, Great People, so-so, paranoid (phone callers) and lazy ones that can't state what the check/money order they sent you is for. Happy New Year! ... go bid on something!:D

What does checking/reading his feedback have to do with this, at all? ALL the negative feed backs occured withen a 3-4 day period, DAYS AFTER they won the items. When these people were bidding, the buyer hasd over 300 POSITVE and 2 NEGATIVE.

Okay, how is THIS related to Hot Rodding?:

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85651

Oh, cause it is a MODEL of a hotrod, so it is related, right? There are also models of people, models of buildings, so this is GENERAL.

    How about this:

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=82171

Oh, because some hot rods are painted with flake. But you also paint kitchen tables, office supplies, murals with this same paint. This is GENERAL.

    Well then what about this:

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85402

Oh yah, you use tools to work on hot rods. But you also use them to build things, you use them to fix things, etc. Not just Hot rods, so GENERAL.

This took 30 seconds to find 3 links of shit that is NOT hot rodding. Building models is not hotrodding, its building models. Painting is painting. And buying tools is buying tools.

I buy a ton of shit off egay for my car, so I think it is alot more related to this hobby then you want it to be. How often do you find yourself looking for a part and one pops up on egay for the right price? Oh wait, you are probably one of those I WILL ENVER BUY FROM EGAY guys. Gimme a break

Couple sought in alleged eBay scam may have left country

By CHRIS W. COLBY, [email protected]
    December 22, 2005

Two East Naples residents wanted for questioning about a scam involving hundreds of customers on the eBay Web site cleared out personal belongings from their condominium last weekend and phoned their employers Tuesday to say they had returned to their home country in Central Asia.

One of them also told their landlord that they needed money because they were trying to bring their two children to the United States from their native Uzbekistan, but permission was denied by federal officials.

Collier County Economic Crimes Unit investigators have received complaints from more than 200 American and Canadian residents who said they bought electronic equipment such as digital cameras and iPods on eBay but never received the items from the seller.

They bought the items in auctions run by an eBay user with the screen name Alisher71. Many paid between $200 and $500 by cashier's check or personal check.

Wanted for questioning are Alisher Mardonov, 34, and his girlfriend, Shahnova Khakimova, 31. They're residents of an East Naples address, 1765 Courtyard Way, #205, where the customers sent payment for the items. And the would-be buyers were told to make the check out to either Mardonov or Khakimova.

Collier Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Stephanie Spell said Wednesday the two are wanted only for questioning and aren't accused of committing any crime. But investigators want to question the two about the transactions and are tracing their background. So far, they've learned the couple may have come from Uzbekistan, a landlocked country near Afghanistan.

"We're working with (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to determine their immigration status," Spell said.

The U.S. Secret Service also is involved because of the interstate implications of the thefts, Spell said. And the Sheriff's Office has issued a be-on-the-lookout bulletin to its own deputies and law enforcement agencies across the country.

"We have some specialty units assigned to determine if they're still in the area," Spell said.

They may not be. Mardonov called his and Khakimova's employer, K.J.'s Tropical Palm Cafe, 4221 U.S. 41 E., on Tuesday. Co-workers said the couple told them they had returned to Uzbekistan and wouldn't be returning to work. The pair had worked at the cafe and at other restaurants in the area for about five years.

Spell said investigators are trying to verify whether what the co-workers said is true. They're also obtaining search warrants to gain lawful entry to the couple's condo.

Their landlord, Diana Tarpley, said Wednesday a neighbor told her the couple had rented a trailer to move personal belongings out of their King's Lake condominium Saturday. Tarpley said she tried to enter the condo Tuesday afternoon but found the locks had been changed.

She said she received a call five hours later, about 7 p.m., from sheriff's investigators. Someone had returned to the condo and stuck the new door keys and the original pool and mailbox keys in between the front door and its outer screen door.

The investigators and the Naples Daily News had left business cards in the door asking Mardonov to call but received no answer.

When Tarpley entered the condo, the furniture was still there, as were dirty dishes in the sink and food in the refrigerator. She said there also were bags of recently purchased items she believes were Christmas gifts with the tags still on them. Tarpley said she saw no electronic equipment such as iPods or digital cameras.

"I don't know what to do. Have they skipped town or are they on vacation or what?" Tarpley said.

Tarpley said the couple moved in around the end of September, paying three months' rent in advance. As proof of his identity, Mardonov produced a driver license that said he was in this country under political asylum.
Tarpley said Mardonov told her he had planned to pick up his two children in New York around Thanksgiving, but the visa was denied at the last minute.

"So the last time I talked to him, he said he needed to go to court, and he needed money. He said it would be expensive, although he didn't say how expensive," Tarpley said.

The Sheriff's Office began investigating after customers realized their purchases weren't coming and began filing reports Saturday. The Alisher71 account was suspended by eBay on Monday, but not before more than 100 users filed negative feedback complaints against the user.

The Sheriff's Office issued a nationwide alert for the couple's two vehicles, a white 1996 Chrysler four-door, Florida tag F09KSP, and a silver 2001 Mercedes four-door, Florida tag C146IN.

Spell said investigators also are working with eBay's fraud unit. Some customers may be able to get partial refunds from eBay through its item dispute process. The customers have organized on the Internet and say they number around 400. They believe the thefts may top $250,000, but that hasn't been independently confirmed.

"It's particularly heinous that someone's selfish act would deprive so many people of their Christmas gifts," Spell said.

Those who believe they are victims of Alisher71 or have information regarding Mardonov or Khakimova are asked to call Detective Panayiota Kotokis at (239) 774-8033 or e-mail her at [email protected].
