All good information, except I have discovered a snag in my plan. As I said I have 2 early 40's chassis. I was going to measure up the hole diameter in the one missing the front spring hanger, or as I have now discovered the front spring horn. I dragged out the second chassis and put them side by side. I could not believe it but the front 2 inches are different between the chassis. The horn of the one I have will be to short. I am going to start a new thread titled something like 1940's chev chassis to get to the bottom of this. Steve
The last jail cells I worked on were welded. They were solid panels. The earlier ones were bars and also panels. I cant say why the rivets were chosen over welding. I do have an opinion on the matter but we are getting off topic here. There is a marvelous story as to how structural bolts made the first inroads into the replacement of rivets in most steel buildings, bridges and such. Quite an interesting evolution, but off topic.
