Kinda ruins the simplicity of a spun aluminum disk - Personally I consider that a hub cap (aka wheel cover).

    Hello,

Having been introduced to Moon Discs at an early age, I have grown to enjoy them on all cars. It is just one of those things that makes the car look fast, just sitting there. I know there are newer versions that are hubcaps, but the original ones that had to be screwed in were the epitome of the racer look. When the hubcap versions came out, it just did not have the same feeling. The rim showed and obviously the screws were missing, so it was just another hubcap.

In one of our early days at Lion’s Dragstrip, in between the times when my brother was racing his 58 Impala, I was given the job of walking around taking movies of the race cars. So, my introduction to Lion’s Dragstrip was as full as one could imagine. I wandered all over to get the best location for my movies without fighting anyone for clarity of the scene. If I had a telephoto lens, I would have socked my self in the spectator’s side about a football field down, by myself and let the telephoto do its thing. But, with a simple point and shoot camera, it was getting closer to the action and wandering all over the place.

The Drifters from the South Bay Area of Los Angeles were close to Lion’s Dragstrip. Their club was involved from an early time and the race cars were quite interesting looking. White was the color for most of their cars. The looks ranged from painted wheels to Moon Discs. We saw both and filmed only the red painted wheels. So, it is your choice to see which look is the most exciting, Moon Discs or painted wheels.

Whether it has/had red steel wheels or the ever popular Moon Spun Aluminum Discs, the look was there and the white 1934 Ford Altered Coupe just said … “Let’s Race…” 50s-60s style.

No pic, but this reminds me of Brent Macky who had an A roadster pickup with Moon discks & ohv Lincoln power. When he was a senior in high school he got on the bus once with a spun alminum tied on his head like a Chinese hat...what a guy.

Don't know if these salt flat flats would be considered moon since they're not convex but I like em.

    Hello,

When Moon Equipment Spun discs came out, they were the screw-in type. That made them not come off in competition of any kind. Drags, Bonneville or track racing were the main users. Track racing did get some bumps and bruising, but they were supposed to streamline the wind resistance on those high speed racing cars.

At the drags, it looked good as they rolled up to the line, but for 10-12 seconds in those early days and even into the 9 second range, the streamlining was negligible. But, they looked good and fast. At the Bonneville and El Mirage high speed runs, then, the streamlining had some effects that were good.

Chuck Porter’s Body Shop in the San Fernando Valley in the early days, utilized an unusual version of the Moon Discs. Did it help in the winning ways at the drag and those high speed runs?
