Hot Rods LOVE THEM OR HATE THEM - LET'S SEE CARS WITH MOON DISC

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Dec 22, 2020.

  1. In my younger days I couldn't afford mags and I wasn't too crazy about baby moons, but seeing the articles and coverage about the dry lakes racers & Bonneville Salt Flats in Hot Rod Magazine I really liked the moon disc look.

To me they just gave the illusion of speed so lets see those hamb friendly Hot Rods & customs with moon disc.

Your Model A truck is just overall spot on. That one has always been one of my favorites on here.

I love the look of Moon discs, however they don't love me. Every set I've ever run seems to get damaged soon after I put them on. Here are photos of Larry Foss' Model A that I took in 1974. It was later slightly updated and featured in American Rodder. Scan-190209-0003.jpg

  12. These were still in the original Moon boxes when I got them. I probably did not use them for the same reason as everyone else. My rear wheels were mullet wheels (right width and offset but well you know) and I wanted to cover up the ugly. LOL

  17. Snap-ons were available in the late '50s and were the most common on street cars. What is phony about them? Just a question, OK?

  24. I have to admit that I am not a fan. My 66 pu had them on it when I got it and I now have a set of five for sale cheap if anyone needs some. :D Pretty sure they were on it for a similar reason as what @porknbeaner mentions...to cover up two wagon wheels on the back. At least I found two original steel wheels under the front ones.

Rims are tapped 10-32 for stainless steel button head screws. I could not find the depth on the Moon spun disk on the Moon website. Ordered the Speedway reproduction disks, since Speedway had front spindle depth data.

The disks are drilled for long length valve stems - It is a driver, so periodic maintenance must be easy.

This is the second set of disks on this custom (also went through a set of disks on my Off Topic Cummins powered F150). I drive my stuff with enthusiasm (and live on a nasty dirt road). The rims flex and tear up the aluminum around the screw holes. Also sometimes vibrate the screws loose from the threaded hole.

Fastening is a work in progress - my current attempt survived a round trip to Lead Ain't Dead -2020. The current fastener set up is (from the tire out):

10-32 tapped hole in rim > spun aluminum disk > custom cut rubber washer > stainless steel #10 washer (rounded edge toward aluminum > stainless steel #10 external tooth washer > 10-32x1/4" stainless steel button head bolt. Assemble with a healthy amount of medium (blue) thread locker.

Check screws frequently - I've lost a few screws (fortunately, never threw a disk). The rim slopes away from the disk, the mating surfaces meet like "\/". It takes a while to develop a feel of how much to tighten the screws to crush the disk against the rim. The rubber washer and positioning the sharp edge of the stainless steel washer away from the aluminum are critical. I can't find my pictures of the first set of disks - the screw holes got ugly.

I only have about a year on this fastening technique - Do NOT know about the long term reliability.
