Can't imagine that they throw much light...

Never been able to find anything appealing about them. Odd looking for odd looking sake, whoever's got them, they're welcome to them.

  7. Personally, I don't care for them and don't think there is a middle ground, IMHO they do nothing to improve the looks of a hot rod, only distract.

They fall in the same category of the rectangle headlights that street rodders were using in the 80's,

Just hard to beat the simplicity of a round headlight, Original,Guide or King Bees. HRP

  8. To my knowledge Ruxton was the only automobile to be equipped with the Woodlight headlights from the factory.

I found a image with conventional big headlights and I think it is a improvement.HRP

I have to admit that I have never seen a pair lit up at night. Do they cast a decent beam? I cant see how they could.

Oh, and they are butt ugly

IMHO, very advanced in design. Like them.......they grow on you but need the right car.

While slightly "OFF TOPIC " these adjustable head " PYLE-NATIONAL " aircraft landing lights are highly collectible , I always thought a pair of them would look good on a hot rod roadster. But make no mistake, these are rare and high priced if in good working condition, something to search for at swap meets or if going through material at estate sales. They remind me of the E & J lights posted here.

  21. I do not care for the look of either one, but I still like the Big Stock Headlight on 32 Fords. I
guess there is no accounting for Taste or Lack or said. It would be boring if we did not see
something to point at and say Yuck. My opinion on both headlights in question. They are
change for sake of change, not to improve anything. .Jerry from N. C.

They didn't show much light but they came with the car. Old stiff is interesting & cool.

The Woodlites look like they would make an interesting taillight on a 1940's car, though...

  29. I like the fact that they exist and are used occasionally. That is the heart and soul of hot rodding.
For anything that costs upwards of 4 figures, though, I better like it, my wife better like it, my neighbor better like it, the guy I pass going the other way on the street better like it. That's a lot of scratch for something so hit-r-miss.

I think the Woodlites look great on certain cars, others not so good. It's not a hot rod, but I have 6 of them on my Cord L29: head, cowl, and tail. I love the look of them on it. They are a huge improvement over the round lights, and they give it a unique flare that people always want to talk about then they see them. Streamlined and sporty, aircraft inspired styling, when aircraft styling was avant-garde. Cord would install them for the buyer upon request. They would do just about anything to sell a $3500 car in the depression.
I have driven at night with them. The beam is very well focused, with the top of the beam being a dead level line between light and dark, about 4 feet off the ground, and below that a flood of light about the width of the road. Like any old non-sealed beam of this era, low power bulbs and tarnished reflectors produce a lot less light than we are used to with our modern equipment. But the lighting is adequate for 50 mph or so. If I was going to drive it a lot at night, I would look into brighter bulbs, re-polish the reflectors, and turn up the voltage of the generator a bit.
