we are.... all....um ..er .."different" in the mind. call me. if you want. No caller Id, so leave a message, if you do call and I am not there.. LOL...I have a Doctor meeting later this afternoon, a DMD with heavy duty Lyme study backround which I really needed! I'm now hooked up with him bigtime, on Me, and got him hooked to my "Head" Doctor who is the guy who proved I had hidden Lyme that no other"medical"doctor would even believe me on that! My Son, living back home again, was the key to unravelling what was going on ...when I had really stepped off the edge a "few" times this past wild year! My son is headed out with friends driving to the Fla Keys for a dive trip at 3:30am tomorrow morning, and I hope to get him hooked to my Doctors on my VERY unusual Lyme trip!

Hey, I was in the Natchaug State Mental Health Hospital here for 8 days! got out on July 3rd...just in time for... "Independence day!" :) Loved the place and hardcore staff, fun loving bunch they are, ...and the patients too, 30% ? at least, were younger type Veterans!... go figure!,,,and.. none were "off", in my experiences with them, in my stay there! go figure! This place is just for treatments and study, NOT a warehouse for patients! ..Frank.

  4. Thanks for the link. Do they work well? The price seems almost suspiciously low.

I ruined my hearing in one day, when I was 14 years old. Went shooting with a .22 pistol, no less, shot up several boxes of shell at the local dump. My ears started ringing real loud, as the do when shooting a gun, but mine never stopped. I’m 66 now and they are ringing louder now than back then. I have learned to ignore it, but it has been rough. My point is it CAN happen very quickly for some people, so protect not only your hearing, but everyone’s hearing. Especially your kids and grandkids. Bones

My story is a little different. Eleven years ago I was diagnosed with tonsil cancer, First came the surgery, was let to heal for a couple weeks, then the radiation and a couple weeks into the radiation started the chemotherapy. The chemo doctor said before hand that the chemo treatment I was going to take had 1 bad side effect. Guess what? some hearing loss.
Well 10 years later some hearing loss plus real bad Tinnitus. Mine is like the summer afternoon cicadas buzzing 24 hrs a day. It is louder than a lot of peoples conversation.

Comes with age, even if you worked in a cotton ball bagging job....it sucks, loud noises like drag races
and loud cars, grinding and riveting hide the ringing. The world is a loud place.

It did seem a bit low.....I paid 65 bucks for mine from a gun range in Texas when I was over in USA last year, but I would expect them to be for sale at a higher price at a range shop than from an internet seller....?
Yes they do work well in keeping out loud noise (gunfire etc) while still hearing low sounds (people talking to you)
The volume of what you hear is adjustable to suit what you want to hear and want to block out etc.

  9. Can you tune out maybe what the wife has to say?

  10. Same here, I have it in 1 ear only and don't notice it too much. I now wear ear plugs more than ever or range ear muffs for extended banging-on-shit situations.

  11. Selective hearing... cultivated by any man who has been married more than a month. My late wife was convinced that I was essentially deaf. I actually hear pretty well considering all the noise exposure I've had.

  12. I seem to have it pretty bad, more so in one ear. But I've had my hearing checked and they tell me it is good for someone my age. It sounds like radio static or perhaps a cicada. Lemondana mentioned something about chemo and radiation treatments for cancer perhaps causing his problems. I went through treatment for throat cancer about thirteen years ago and had some pretty severe chemo and radiation at that time. I have to wonder if that has some effect on mine. Can't do anything about it though, just have to live with it I suppose. Things could be a lot worse though, the cancer could have killed me!

If you're in the shop, crank up the volume on ZZ Top

  14. I had a hearing test done maybe 20 years ago. My ringing started after a series of ear infections around 1989. After the test the doctor asked if I had been in the military, more specifically artillery. All the years of fireworks, loud concerts, playing in garage bands, guns, stock car racing, going to funny car shootouts has taken its toll.

I know everything from loud guns, Nitro motors, Rock concerts etc. have been blamed for ringing in the ears and all I can say is maybe so but in my case, I have lived many years through all of the above excessively and never had ringing in my ears that lasted until all of the transmitted electronics entered the world. I feel that all the millivolts sent through the air from satellite transmissions, Wi Fi, remote controls, cell phones, you name it are driving our nervous systems nuts. Think of how much energy has to be sent through the air to get an electronic signal from a satillite to earth. I think of all the electronic systems we hear humming and whistling and think of the millions of electronic devices and transmitters we are exposed to these days. I am very aware that I am not an expert. This is just the best answer I can come to through the years and experience I have had. I have often wondered what the outcome would be if I could close myself off in a sealed sound proof room that electronic signals could not penetrate. I wonder if the constant ringing would stop.

  16. I have had tinnitus since gawd knows when, they say it runs on both sides of my family. One cure that will not work is marijuana, LOL

My doc told me once that one cause was high blood pressure so first thing I would do is get my blood pressure checked. Most of us would have no idea if our blood pressure was high and don't spend a lot of time at the Dr.'s Office.

I think that most cures are just snake oil. If you have tinnitus from damage to the cilia in your cochlea you are basically going to have to learn to live with it.

Hearing specialist I went to said sudden, loud noises are the worst. Gun fire, nail guns etc. Apparently your ears can protect themselves somwhat from noises that start at a low Db and increase gradually or stay constant.

  18. Does it seem like it's worse some days than others to you folks? Or is that just me?

  19. I have days when I cannot hear a damned thing, I just have to tell people that they have to look at me when they are talking to me, my granddad taught me to read lips when I was very young. Other days everything is fine, been that way for a long time.

For me sleeping is sometimes the worse, my left ear seems to bother me more then my right and if I lay on my pillow with that ear down it just roars.

I have these for $40. They're a little higher quality and the batteries last longer than others. Amazon has several brands of electronic earmuffs from $20 to $300. I selected these because they are more compact. They are only 22db noise reduction while the same company makes a pair rated a 30db noise reduction.

It's more likely in this situation that "they" are right about this. Exposure to excessive noise isn't a problem when we're young, or seems that way, but it's cumulative. It will catch up to you, like everything else. As the years go by then the damage starts to become evident.

The .Mil has long tested everybody's hearing once a year, you know the sound proof room and headphones with the beep tones, and the clicker. It goes into medical records. Seems to me they've tried to cover themselves from post service hearing-related disability claims. They have free foam earplugs everywhere, and custom fitted jobs are issued. I think the attitude now is "we gave you earplugs".

My hearing got better for a couple years in a row, so the gal looking at the chart was curious and asks "what do you do?" "Oh, I'm a Helicopter Crew Chief." Hm, blew out the dust I guess. Well hearing is OK, but the tinnitus is sometimes annoying.

One of the loudest single things I've heard other than a Ted Nugent concert was at Osan AFB, there was some fighter jet static run up against the chocks or whatever at full throttle while some tech was adjusting something. JEEZE LOUISE that thing was insane.

I actually stopped going to the range regularly. When I did go, I wore custom made ear plugs, under my muffs, and those where the best I could find.

Even with all that, my ringing was still exacerbated, for weeks. I have resigned myself to just go deaf, in the event of zombie apocalypse.

You know how when you're young and bullet proof, it seems like a good idea to fill a pipe with oxy-acetylene mix in an enclosed workshop to impress the apprentices when you light it. Nearly evacuated the whole block with that one. (40 years ago). You'll have to speak up Sonny.
