Proof that they made pickups from model A coupes. Found this today at a 80 year old friend of mines place. He told me the story of how his dad chopped it of the back of a model a so they could use it around the farm to haul feed. The rest of the car is long gone but this is real solid.

Nice find! First time I've ever seen one that was setup for a trunk. Never knew there was a raised back inner panel and the upright brackets are to the rear, rumble seat cars have them forward a bit.

Midwest farm-boys tend to get real creative sometimes. I've seen lots of evidence of that kind of 'innovativeness' in my explorations around Minnesota. Can't blame 'em for making something (out of what was then) probably pretty worthless.
60 years ago that old model A coupe must have seemed about as valuable as a '90 Taurus wagon does today.:D

  10. That's the hard part, I always find the damn things with that part cut off and long gone.

that looks just like the part that was missing from my '30 coupe when I bought mine,
I've since bought a pass side quarter, and have found a drivers quarter that I need to go look at pretty soon....Scott

A lot of them lost their tail ends in WWII because you could get extra gas ration stamps if you drove a truck for your farm. Also like Alienbaby17 said they were pretty inexpensive and plentiful at that time. There was one with a truck bed on it running around town here for years when I was a kid. I've seen several that they took the trunk lid off and cut the panels around it out enough to stick a pickup box in the space.

Put a back on it, straighten up the edges and hang it on the wall as a desk. Put you a nice mahogany top down inside of it......

Look's like they used a hatchet to remove it..
Nice find though..It'd be a shame not to actually use that on a car...even though some of the idea's were good...

  18. Probably used some tin snips and had a rough time with it! :D

Would be a shame not to put that on a coupe for yourself or to help a fellow rodder out. Great find.

....but there ain't enough of it. This '30 is new 2 me as of last weekend. I'm picturing a high boy with dropped axle, 16" spokes, and banger but the body needs to get fixed first.

I kinda dig this the way it is, but I am a semi sick kinda guy. I would reverse eye spring it, 16's, poppin banger and twice pipes. Leave the bed for a while. Bet you won't be able to get away from it at a show - and it would pizz off lots of guys with high buck rods!! Plus you can haul stuff with it! Tim :)

It was likely removed with a hand axe. Common enough through the 30-40s almost anywhere in the country.
A great repair piece for a crippled coupe.

I was told by a old timer that they would do this conversion so they could get more fuel back during the war. Trucks received more fuel better to drive up in a truck. Not sure if he was full of it but it was a good story

Neat. My uncle has a coupe which was made into a truck and is missing those rear quarters.

He has tried to sell it to me a few times but he wants too much for it. Ill try to get the story of it and Ill try to get my aunt to take a picture of it so we can compare..
