are you sure that's the original restored? as I recall it was redone in the 70's to some purpleish monky wards delivery and totally screwed up.

that car is extra cool... one of the top show rods of all time in my book.

anybody got the car craft with the very first pre Lil' Coffin version on the cover?

Thank God it's been restored to its former glory, It looked like shit when they redid it a few years ago.

    Hey,

Didn't "The Lil Coffin" have two iterations, the one as a "different" lookin' '32 sedan and than the show/model version? I'm not even going to count what happened to it in the seventies/eighties!

I must have missed the second incarnation of that. Sounds like I should be happy that I didn't see it. Are there pictures of that one somewhere?

    The Lil Coffin looks sweet!!!!!!!!!!
Darryl Starbird finally redeems himself for butching up Dave Stuckey's incredible creation.

It's the coolest kustomized rod ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is the original one ,it was done up twice and starbird got it back and wanted to put it back to the way it was when he first did it. There was a story in Rod and Custom a couple years ago about this but guess no one read it as there were no pics. Also was a story about it on Starbirds website about the same time.

Looks great to me, actually it looks even more radical because I think it is lower in the front.

Just to confuse matters more, I believe someone had built a clone of this now latest version. I've seen pics of the clone and it appeared to have a roof that was too short.

I pulled this page from Rikster's site to show some of the "CAR-nage". Not pictured are the topless version, or the two piece windshield.
(Be sure to check out the "Monkey Ward"!)

By the way, if that is the original "El Matador" in the original post (there is a very nice clone), then its restoration from fire damage is equally remarkable.

  14. It was called the Prowler for a while (c. 1978) in orange, green and chrome.

I had the lil Coffin model way back and LOVED that car. Great to see it out again for real. Thanks for the post!

My own personal favorite was the 1980 version. 13 years old, walking into the annual Starbird show at the Municipal in Topeka, and that car being the first thing I saw. Grabbed me in a place that only women have done since...

I could have done without the Monkey Ward Delivery, but it's a shame that he kept redoing the same car rather than building new versions of the Fabulous Phaeton and the 1993 Coffin. Both of those were cool enough that they should still exist.

I'm wondering the same thing. There is a windshield on it, I don't recall that piece of glass before.

It was there. Look really closely at the pic in the top right of the R&C article above, and you can see the windshield. I have the Starbird book (got it for Christmas - thanks wife), and it's clear that the car always had a windshield.

There was a model kit of this version too, kind of a crude kit, but cool.
