Hot Rods Look what followed me home today

  1. I had a patient at work this past October that told me he had a bunch of old engines. I told him I was looking for a 427 for my chevelle that I was going through currently. He tells me he has a complete one out of a Corvette. I got his number and we hooked up today. My dream engine for my 66 that I have had since 1984 has always been a 427. The guy had it on a engine hoist and there it was. Its a 1968 March 20th 435 hp three carbed four speed corvette engine. I ran all the casting numbers and they all match. Its a four bolt block with dimple rods. Its been bored .030 over. After the rebuild it has sat for 30 years. The bores were greased prior to sitting. My friend who is a chevy expert looked it over. He confirmed its all correct. The pan is a corvette that won't fit my chassis and the pushrods are after market performance units. All I need is the correct distributor and tri power. To find one of these complete is hard to do. To find one local and cheap is even harder. Just goes to show rare parts are still out there.     neat! numbers show it was assembled Sep 11th, it's from a 1969 vette as best as I can see (19S.... partial VIN means 1=Chevy Car, 9 = 1969 model year, S = St Louis, which is where Vettes were built). The LR code is 69 Vette 435 hp 427, 3-2bbbl, man trans.

    pretty cool engine. Should work good with the open chamber aluminum heads.

    How's about a picture of them intake ports on the heads please...:)
    That motor should also have a forged steel crank....

  12. Jim i will get some better pics. There was some dirt on the block and the lighting was poor. My buddy gave me the info the best he could using a flash light.

    Never hurts to tell people what you are looking for. Even those who may not be car enthusiasts, they may know someone who is. You'd be amazed what can pop up when you least expect it.

  16. More pics. I know the one intake is factory. The edelbrock im not sure of its age. They had a tarantula followed by a torker. I think this one pre dates those. More research is needed there. The crank is steel we checked it. There is no parting line. The block does not have the reliefs in it to run a 454 crank. I think those came out the next year. The heads have not been ported. I would like to know when those first came out. I'm not a chevy engine guy so I'm learning as I go. Hemis both first and second gen have been my area of interest. The chevelle was my high school car that I sold and then repurchased 26 years later. Now its getting a body off rebuild. Its not being restored to factory its being restored as a bad ass street racer from the late 60s early 70s era. Think of slotted mags and ladder bars etc. Only vintage parts will go on it.

  19. I have the correct 12 bolt with the flat pads that use a plate to bolt the springs on. I have aftermarket moser axles in it. My racing days at the track are over with this car. It won't have slicks on it any more. Just a fast street car like we made as kids is all I want. I have a nitro powered hemi for the track.     FYI, as squirrel and your friend decoded for you, that is a very valuable engine to the diehard numbers matching Corvette collector. It's possible that market has changed, I'm not a corvette collector, I had a friend, years ago, since passed away, Hot Rodder and a serious Corvette collector, paid 25K for a numbers correct 427 tri carb engine for his 67 roadster he purchased at Bloomington Gold Corvette USA, before passing he ran the car through, got 165K for the car with that 25K engine and got 35k for the rebuilt 427 that came out of his roadster. Back then I couldn't believe the money involved in those 60's corvettes, today I would not know, no idea, again just for FYI. Going to be a kick ass Chevelle, Have at it, Enjoy

  23. They do bring crazy money. They guy that came with me sold one for big money. The thing is its not about the money. Its about fulfilling a dream. A dream I had as a 17 year old kid to have a bad ass 427 hot rod. My nitro coupe takes up all my spare money so the chance of ever getting another one most likely won't happen. I do need to check my numbers on my tickets. The most fun I have on the streets is when a vette meets me at a stop light. I know its going to be a good day before the light turns green. If they have their girl friend with the fake boobs in the car it only adds to the fun. The restoration crowd isn't getting this one. Its going to be used as intended. Money has ruined this hobby. This hamb site is about the old days. In my day you bought a car then made it fast and cool. You drove and raced it to have fun. Numbers matching and restorations never entered my mind and never will. When I'm on my last breath the last thing I want to think about is I'm glad I have alot of money in the bank and never had got to build my dream car. Screw that.

  26. I’m right there with you on caring less what it would be worth to the restorers. However, I still remember about 25 years ago when a buddy bought a 396 at a swap meet for cheap that needed rebuilt for his 32 5 window. Another friend of ours checked it out and realized it was a correct date coded motor for his 69 Camaro pace car he was building. So, he offered my buddy with the coupe a rebuilt healthy 427 for the 396 core. That deal worked out great since my buddy just wanted a big block and didn’t care what it was. Deal actually worked in his favor quite a bit from a hot rod perspective.

    And, congrats on the find! That will definitely be cool in your Chevelle!
