In the Detroit area, I think there are quite a few old garages and warehouses and such, still harboring some cool old cars. How you'd be able to find them is another story...except maybe to start buying property...or maybe posing as a buyer and just look. Hey, that's an idea.

Holy Crap:eek::eek: That is so cool.

  5. 57 had two standard transmissions the one with OD were often 292's. the E and F birds had a stronger trans without OD an they are the rare ones.

  6. Found my 57 Bird in a garage in somewhat of the same situation.

Whats the data plate on the firewall start with?

If it starts with "C" its a 292 engine. I think this is what you have.I base this guess on the style of the taillight lenses.

All "C" code cars were standard trannys.

    "D" is a regular 312 engine

"E" is the dual quad 312

    "F" is the supercharged engine.

If its an "E" or "F" CALL ME

I'd put a 350 in it and never open the hood at car shows again for the rest of it's life.

  10. That was a nice find....

  11. Looks like someone tried a little customizing on it with chrome tail light and head light rims.

My Mom bought a black '56 T Bird 312 stick in '58...I ran it at Fremont for a couple of Sundays and blew the box.

She was so mad at me she traded it straight across with her car broker friend for a '56 Ford convertible!

The taillights are different for different engines even in the same year?

The header panel and decklid emblems are also missing.

  20. oh....and yes that safe goes with the house....

  21. The taillights were not equipted with the backup lite lenses on the baseline el-cheapo "C" cars.Unless specially ordered.

I was wrong.Since its a "D" code car. Those coulda or coulda not had the backup lite option.Generally the "D" codes had backup lites.

As I said my guess was based on a stick car and no backup lites.

    And I was wrong

In this case I don't think it'd be rude to flip the 'Bird.

I lived up North my first 20 years and there are thousands of garages that never had the doors open. I always wanted to be the official county " Garage Inspector ".

Can't be that rare, my neighbor a few doors down is in his late 70's and has two manual 56 TBirds. One he bought new in 56.

I'm not a restorer by nature but I think that is one car I would return to stock. They look custom even when not customized and are worth so much money these days that it would make my decision easy.

Your car has so much going for it, black, stickshift, top in place, etc. Great find.

Someone gave it some "love" in the past. The extra chrome, the emblems removed, and I won't raise my right hand to the mirrors. It makes me wonder what it had for wheel covers. Some type of flipper full cover, lots of wax and Brillo pads for the chrome, full safety check/service, drive it as is. Well, that's what I'd do.

In response to "mashed", since when is flipping something rude? You musta went to school somewhere in my neighborhood south of Det?
