Sorry to hear that. I met Lloyd during a Ford racing legends autograph session in '03. He was by far the quietest, most polite of them all. A true gentleman. RIP

I remember him in the early 60s taking a roadster into the corners at Indy "crossed up" on the bricks like an old dirt racer. Used to watch it on closed circuit T.V. at the local movie house. I miss him and those days. Much more innovation in racing than there is now.

Check out those Atlas Buchron tires on that modified.

I remember the time he had the 500 on the bag, came in for fuel
and ripped out the fuel filler neck.

Maybe that was Jim mcelreath ,anyway i've slept since then and dam near as old as him.

Both Texans and great race drivers.

  8. That was in '69 and yes he was in top form. Looking at the results of the race itself Mario looked faster. But, one had to conserve their cars a lot more back then and Lloyd never got to play his 'late race strategy', and I'm certain there would have been.

  9. Took a while to get those Bucrons! 3 Hold air and the left rear had to be jacked up to "appear" aired up! I'd rather cut the wheel out than pull those tires off today.

  10. I remember the fuel deal at Indy also !! RIP Lloyd >>>>.

  12. Thank you for the shot.

  13. Too many passing these days. I'm convinced that part of Heaven is getting to spend time with folks that we never got to here on earth. Looking forward to sitting down with Lloyd..............

Lloyd holds a special place in my heart.

The story my folks tell is growing up in Wichita Falls and my dad being a racer that he knew Lloyd. My mom has told me so many times over the years that Lloyd and his wife (not sure if they were already married then) introduced my parents. That was in the early 1940's.

I got a chance to tell him the story one day at a car show.

I like to think he was the "matchmaker"!

Stomping all the sports cars at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut with an Offy Midget is part of the Lloyd Ruby ledgend. RIP

  17. From the days when the GOOD drivers could get into almost anything & make it competitive...unlike today's "specialists". He was old-time tough, that's for certain.

The story of his driving for Ford at LeMans is amazing.

  18. Listened to many a "500" on the radio in my youth hearing that name announced. Always hoped he could have won one at INDY. Really wanted my relatives the Bettenhausens to win one for the old man, Tony Sr. but it wasnt to be. RIP Lloyd Ruby, a great racer, and a better man.
