Well guys I don’t know how long this thread will survive however I’m looking for feedback from members living in Texas.

I’m married to a Texas gal and we have been down there many times since we married in 2004.
Visiting is one thing but lately given the state of the situation here I’ve been thinking and wondering what it would be like to make the move to Texas.

There are some upsides and a few downsides to however I’m not sure at this point.
Maybe more time to drive my RPU would be nice :D

You could always rent a place and stay for six months or a year. You’ll be trading seasonal snow for seasonal sweltering heat.
Not quite as extreme, but I lived in SoCal all my life and only did short visits to Northern California. My thought was, “no way would I move there “ but I was forced to stay when my Dad got sick and I got to really try the place on for size. I bought a place and have been up here 11 years now.
You never know until you try.

  5. What I know about Texas is it's a hot bed of Hot Rodding and the people I know that live there love it, My cousin went to Austin, Texas for work and was there for 2 months, he came back home and ask to be transferred to Texas, they granted the transfer and he spent the next 20 years there.

I hear Dripping Springs is a cool place to live. HRP

Can’t do that because my wife has 5 kids and 18 grandkids all over the DFW area :D

As far as heat goes I’ve been there for July and August previously so I know what that’s like :D
South east Oklahoma close to Texas might also be an option.

Avoid Houston and Austin. Just my .02 c
My oldest lives in DFW and is heading back to OK soon. It's expensive to buy a place in the Metroplex. I guess it all depends on what you do for a living and where you have to live.

I moved to Ft. Worth in 75 from Cali. Never had a desire to go back and never had a desire to leave Texas. I love it here. As previously said... Texas has a lot of hot rods, customs, and any other type of motor vehicle you can think of.

The heat takes a little getting used to but we have a/c... We do get cold a time or two in the winter. This year Canada came to visit for a few days.

  10. Come on down, brother. Help ya' unload. I live in Allen, northeast of Dallas. My parents just built a new house on an acre & a half .. 30 minutes east of me. Nevada, Texas. ( Nuh-vay-duh )

Metroplex is getting expensive .. but if you stay about 30 to 45 minutes out .. still great Texas living.

    Bring your guns, booze, & Bible .. & you'll be fine !!!

I probably should say I've been for work. Austin is a fine and fun town. Good music scene in most of the state obviously. Texas blues is some fun stuff. Lots of dirty country/rockabilly act stuff goin on. A buddy of mine was a road tour manager for a dude named Dale Watson that was out of Austin, I got to hang with him and his band a few times, in my wilder days... Cool guys.

  14. Texas has a wide selection of geographic and cultural zones. From the antelope prairies of the Pan Handle to the Bayous in the southeast.; the Red River in the north to the Reo Grande In the south: The mountains in El Paso to the piney forests in East Texas. I'm in Southcentral Texas in The Hill Country and I love the scenic state and "Farm to Market" roads that twist around the way the first cow walked, the rivers for toobin' when the weather is warm, the thirty-plus live music venues within a 20-minute drive, the 10 month long car-show-culture, the third coast of the USA if you like salty air with your tropical drinks with those little umbrellas. There's more I could say but I don't want too many snowbirds to move in and water down my blessings.

I liked Tx. enough. Ga. and Ala. are other states also on my like list,I'd be OK living in. Fla./Miami has be good, only thing I don't care for now days,is I have to drive 2 to 3 hours one way now ,to get to any sat-nite type oval race tracks.when only 20 years ago there were 3 less then 1 hr. away>now gone :(

  16. As an outsider, and only a visitor to Texas, I can only offer experience based on those visits, FWIW.
My brother in law moved from Nashville to College Station to be close to their son and grands.
That is a nice area, not crowded, and stable with Texas A&M there.
What was the nightmare were the bigger cities, like DFW and Austin. A traffic hell! But so is Nashville.! San Antonio was nice.
I would have to have family there to move from TN, though. Just sayin’.
Or as David Crockett said, “You all can go to hell, but I’m going to Texas!”
    He died at the Alamo.

Lots of things to consider, we have good health care up here and we pay the taxes to prove it !

As I get older I like winter less. Heat vs cold I don’t know which one wins we heat our homes, Texan’s cool them.
We had central air installed in our house here a few years ago and we have had to run it for about a week or so every summer :D

On the other hand the heat is needed from the furnace sometimes into May here and the home heating season starts again in October usually depending on the year.

I’m so over this situation which we don’t discuss here and rightly so.
I’m really impressed with what Texas has done with that recently.

I know that Jan would be ecstatic to be closer to her kids and grandkids.
I have no grandkids and probably won’t ever have any.

Hard to say what the right thing to do is,
A lot of this has been driven by frustration and
    thinking out loud basically.

We don’t have the resources to live in 2 places
    so that’s another thing.

    Texas sun and roadsters.
you have thinning hair, or none at all?
You think we wear cowboy hats because we're cowboys?

  19. I have been TX next door neighbour for 38 years now. The heat of the summer is really starting to get to me now all you want to do is hibernate... If you can "SNOWBIRD" it that would be another thought for you...

Come on over. I live in a super small town of 1k population. Houses here literally sell within hours of going on the market. Used to it was 2nd 3rd generation kids moving back but this year were getting people from Cali and some of the bigger surrounding cities moving in. We have a new addition in development as we speak. There are zero jobs here but people keep coming. Some work from home or are retired and some drive 50 miles to work. Texans are about community, faith, family and we love cars, guns and sports. Look up Cooks Garage in Lubbock. It's a car guys kinda place and they have car shows and concerts often.

-- yep, good idea - have lived in Texas - if the heat don't get you the humidity will drown you - of course, you will likely get plenty of true Winter if you move and miss the cold & snow

  24. We like it here, but the real estate market is sky-rocketing. Seriously, you should have thought about this even 3 years ago and you'd save a ton of money. The value of our home has went up $100k since 2016.

Someone said no state income tax. That's true, but they get you on the property taxes. I'm in process of protesting mine for this year.

All of our family is here, cold is minimal. It's a nice place to live.

I spent a couple of years there for work, lived in Denton. Texas was an interesting place for me to be as an outsider, but I never got to see enough- that work thing. The overall cost of living was pretty reasonable, less than you experience up here for sure. As a Canuck, make sure that you have a plan for medical coverage (or a darned large savings account), and be damned sure that your insurer will stick with you as you age. We had some neighbours that had some problems with this. And I didn’t miss shovelling snow even once......

I like the piney woods of east Texas, it's not a whole lot different than here in Bama. Hill country is nice, too. The large cities are not my cup of tea. I've driven east to west and west to east, and some north south, it's really an amazing state. Everybody needs to see it once anyway.

Denton is a college town but we have many small towns on the west side of I35W and they are easy to get to, Krum ,Ponder, Justin and north of us Sanger. But as you move toward Dallas it gets congested. They are presently widening I35W north of FT. Worth to make it easier commute. The is some smaller towns just west of Ft. Worth on I20/I30, Weatherford, . Some s towns like Alvor south of Ft. Worth. I moved out of Dallas where I lived almost all my life and moved to Denton 43 years ago and love it. If you have any questions that you need answered P. M. me. By the way Oklahoma has a State income tax, but we are only about 35 minutes from the casinos in OK. Frank

We’re familiar with parts of East Texas, Jan’s parents lived in Van until they passed away.

I like the area and also like the Tyler area too.
