This is the best change over we did on the black 1958 impala. It made the rear look cool and lit up the night with all 6 on at the same time. The wiring was cuckoo, but it did work until we sold the car in late 1964. The one other thing that we had on our 58 impala (no photos) was a sturdy custom, solid bar trailer hitch. We pulled the 1940 Willys Coupe to the drags and back plenty of times.
But, it saved our rear end plenty of times at sloped drive-in restaurant parking lots (Merle's NB) and at regular drive in lots over the bumps. It scraped, not the bumpers.
We always got a front/back row parking spot at Merle's. The front row was next to the building, then a drive through with front/back row parking. Then behind us was a slightly sloped hill with one last road and parking spots in front of the road. When people were ready to leave and had stick shift cars, as soon as the emergency brake was let go, those cars rolled down to the next cars in the front row. The trailer hitch stopped any damage to our 58 Impala, but dented in license plates and bumpers.
A tow hitch on a 1958 impala? Yes and it worked double duty.
I knew I had a photo of the 58 Impala taken by a cub reporter from our high school newspaper for a full page feature. The photo is from a copy of the newspaper and not as clear as a real photo print.
