Looking for ideas for a console. I've seen some made from headlight buckets and such but need something longer.

I don't have any pictures at the moment but will get you a couple tomorrow. I am going to use an American LeFrance fire engine stainless head light bezel. It is oblong, about a foot and a half long, and tapered from front to back when looking at it from the side. I need to make a stainless boot plate to match and contour it to fit my floor but I think it will work out ok in my 31 roadster. Will add a couple of pictures of it later tomorrow.

I have a 57 chevy air intake duct that fits above the headlight and runs along the inner fender. I was planning on using it to construct a console. no, I don't have a pic.

  4. I polished an old brass sterilizer up I have, and it fits nice, but don't know if I'll use it. Thought I could hide a cup holder in it, and use it for small storage.
Your only limited by your imagination.

  5. Here is a picture of mine I made it from two three inch exhaust tubes 90 degree bend them formed the metal sides and center. I wanted it to look like something that could have been there in the 50's Hobo Jim

Hot rods don't have consoles, do they?

but I made something for my street driven race car, it holds water bottles, phones, ipod, sunglasses, maps, has a charger for the phones, and an amp and speakers to plug the ipod into.

I have no idea if this is what you're looking for.

  7. Got tired of spilling drinks, loosing all those little things ya tend to carry around in the car. Wanted something for our roadster that "looks the part" and not plastic street rodderish. Took a 1 gal. thinner can and cut out the face of it. Bent over the sharp edges and screwed it to the floor in front of the bench seat. Hey, it works great...
Will hold a drink or two, shop rag, pen, condoms, change, etc, etc...

Not really a console in the modern sense but that is what a commonly refer to as this project. I built the trans tunnel and did not like the way the e brake was on the side of the tunnel.

So I welded in an elevated "platform" in the tunnel and leveled off a flat surface. Cut an aluminum plate off this template in 1/4" on a friends water jet. The finished piece is still in progress.

The finished item will have the boot retainers countersunk into the plate as well as Phillip head mounting screws. The sides will be beveled and the piece engine turned. I built it .300 larger than the opening so the carpet and insulation will be tucked underneath it.

Does that qualify as a console?

Not really a console but a place to hide two gauges a radio head unit and heater and ac controls. I made it out of an old after market heater. DSC02865.JPG IMG_0346.JPG IMG_0362.jpg

You can make any style and size of console out of plywood and cover it with foam padding and vinyl. A custom car tradition since the fifties.

The Heater housing takes it. Great Idea.

I can't find a photo, but one of the coolest I've seen (a photo of) was made from the taillight "tube" on the top of a 59 Olds stuck between a set of bucket seats with the "taillight" just at the front of the rear seat footwell.

Thanks guys, I really like clean and uncluttered details. If only my workbench and garage was as uncluttered as my heater box.

How about a toilet seat since most home made consoles look like crap?

My DD had a console of sorts already; more of a shallow tray. But despite late-model cars coming out with all kinds of ergonomic cleverness, they still don't come out with waste-paper baskets. So I had one woven by the local foundation for the blind. It's shaped to sit in the shallow console and wedge under the underside of the dash.
