I never noticed this until a friend with a '40 Deluxe pointed out that my Standard rings had been chrome plated. Duh! Now I'm really proud of my chromed Standard rings.

    I am a detail fanatic.
I like them so much better that I didn't think twice about the cost. When it comes to my cars , I get financially stupid real fast. If I like it, I wait and save no matter how long it takes.

You should be proud. They are beautiful and you don't see them every day.

So far there's been a lot of discussion about standard & deluxe headlight doors but not much on where I can get a matching chrome standard door. I have a nice set of original standards but don't want to try match painting them to the red color of my '40. Already went thru that repainting the front sheet metal after a fender bender (a royal pain). Plus we like the look of chromed headlight doors with the red but prefer the standard's design over the deluxes that are on the coupe now. I know I can get a standard door chromed but I think chroming pot metal is difficult & hard to find someone that does it. So, maybe there's no easy solution to my dilemma. Now don't get me started on the differences in standard & deluxe trunk latch handles.

Sorry there seems to be no easy solution to your headlight doors. As usual in this hobby if you want something out of the norm you usually have to go the extra mile and spend the extra bucks to get what you want. Since all of the chromed deluxe headlight doors are pot metal I would think that any competent chrome shop could handle the job.

Now whats this thing about trunk handles?

I believe the handle on the red car is a Western Auto Parts replacement handle from back in the day.

This is pretty cool. Lots of 40 Ford details coming to surface lately.

Interesting..... I have no idea. I have not seen one like the one on the red car before 42 Merc may have the answer.Any more old timers out there that want to offer up an opinion?

Exactly !! Notice the lack of the lock cylinder cover and the ribs cast in the handle to resemble the ribs in the real 40 handle.

For years I figured it was probably an aftermarket handle from someplace like Western Auto but then I was told it was a factory standard by a local builder. Whatever it is, it works a lot better than a crappy Taiwan repop trunk mechanism I tried for awhile & is certainly cooler (pitted chrome & all).

Here's an oldie but a goodie. Frank Giannitti's flamed deluxe on the cover of Streetscene. There was a group of us sitting on a park bench right next to it when Joe Mayall shot the pictures. Frank's coupe had some of the coolest flames ever on a '40. Streetscene 5-1980.jpg Streetscene 5-1980.jpg Streetscene 5-1980.jpg

Well input on this thread has been a little slow lately so I thought I might as well post up a few pictures of my coupe that a friend took the other day while the hood was still off. Maybe it will spark a little conversation.

I was having some paint touch up on my hood a few years back and the car got more attention hoodless than when the hood was on. 100_0267.jpg

That is just a "self leveling cooling system" :)
