Glass guys broke all the window frames, so they had to be re-made. New frames have been plated and are at the (new) glass guy's, so they should be done in a couple of days. Windshield and rear window trim showed up and were installed, but Don doesn't like the way the windshield trim fit, so it's being re-mounted. Some progress, though:
Don and Tony: What a fantastic job! I only just found this thread and the work and vision is exceptional! All the best, Mart.
We're not out of the woods yet. The rear window ('52 Ranch Wagon, remember?) and trim are apparently a success, but the windshield and its trim are not yet copacetic. I know, I posted a picture on the 4th that looked like the windshield was a done deal, but in fact it was sticking out of the sheet metal and looking peculiar. (An aside here: the windshield and rear window are not mounted with a rubber extrusion on the pinch weld, like the stock arrangement; the glass is glued into the roof using the pinch weld as the base surface, and then the "stainless" trim is glued onto the glass.) Don has a scheme to mount the windshield glass to a new surface, deeper in the roof than it has been, and this should improve its looks considerably. Cross your fingers for Don. Yet to be completed are the belt molding below the quarter windows (needs polishing), the side glass mounted in its plated frames, and the drip rail moldings over the tops of the side windows. Any top chop is major surgery, and I thought I was prepared for that. Surprisingly, the metal surgery went smoothly, the repainting of the whole car was seemingly trouble-free. But then Don lost his staff, and the painter and glass guy (both subcontractors) went out of business.
"But then Don lost his staff, and the painter and glass guy (both subcontractors) went out of business." Ouch! Best wishes to you and Don.
Don may be upset with me for posting this untidy picture, but I'm excited about the shapes of the new window frames!
I've been looking forward to an update. Thanks. It's coming along nicely! Any chance you will display this build at GNRS?
I hadn't thought about the GNRS. I wouldn't be in the indoors part, but might very well do the drive-in.
Looks good for sure, just wish it still looked like a victoria. Fine craftsmanship though, beautifully done.
It takes a little untidyess to get work done. It's part of the progress. You have a sound reason to be Excited. Well done my friend, well done!
We’re only 97.437% done (still a few trim and interior parts to finish up) but, it’s close enough to shoot a few pictures outside to show you how it looks. When it’s all done and life gets settled down a bit for me I may come back and describe some of the struggles to get this thing to the finish line. Right now, I still have work to do.
