Late flathead distributor questions

Putting together a stock distributor with pertronix inside. Have a new gear to install. It has an index mark on the bottom face. Does it indicate how the gear should be installed? The gear appears to be a very tight fit. Is this normal, or is my gear in need of a little reaming (or is it shrink fit)?

Also, how much up-down play is appropriate in the shaft? If minimal is necessary, what does one use for shims between the gear and the distributor "shank"?
Is there a preferred size roll-pin for the gear?
