Event Coverage Lake Area Roadsters Reliability Run in the Black Hills

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by vintagehotrods, May 22, 2009.

  1. Last weekend the Lake Area Roadsters made their Annual Reliabilty Run in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota and knocked down some miles on some of the best cruising roads in the country. We all had a great time even though there was a little rain and sleet to deal with on Friday, Saturday more than made up for that with over 200 miles of driving in perfect topless roadster weather, bright sunshine in a calm and cloudless sky. We started out our stay Thursday night at the Crooked Creek Campgound and Resort in Hill City in the heart of the Black Hills. http://www.crookedcreeksd.com/ We awoke to a cool, windy and cloudy day on Friday with a short drive to Hill City for a hearty breakfast at the local cafe. We overwhelmed the staff so our gal Charlene pitched in and helped them out. We then made our way to Rapid City to fellow member and friend Gene Jobgen's shop, A & A Restoration to meet up with some more folks to start our tour of shops, a huge vintage tin stash, an antique motorcycle restoration shop in Sturgis, historic Deadwood gambling halls, and more.

  2. Our first stop was at the Hot Rod Institute http://www.hotrodinstitute.com/ in Rapid City where they teach all areas of Hot Rod construction. Founder Doug LaRue gave us a great tour of his facility. We were overwhelmed at the sheer number and scope of the projects that they were building. It was great to see what the next generation of Hot Rodders were building and it had all of us wishing we could go back to school right there!

  3. We left the Hot Rod Institute and drove west about 20 miles into the hills. We couldn't believe our eyes as we wound our way up some rough gravel roads to a huge stash of old tin. The hills were covered with all kinds of old cars and parts. The Black Hills still have some gold left in them! The owner of this stash will remain nameless for obvious reasons for now.

Hey Jerry I was up at Randy's shop yesterday. He still insists that no "exhibition driving" was cause for his roadster being hauled home on the stretcher. Randy said that is his story and he is sticking to it.

We fired up the new flathead for his RPU and hung out at the shop for a couple hours. He said you guys had a great time.

Thanks for the pics. Do you have any of your esteemed president's mishap? He said he paid you off and that there were no photos. I dont know.....

After that mind blowing overload of tin worship we wound our way back out of the hills to a comfortable cruise west into the Black Hills National Forest to Nemo which led us on a beautiful drive up Vanocker Canyon road to Sturgis. We ran into rain and even sleet further up the road from here.
<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td>[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From Lake Area Roadsters Reliability Run in the Black Hills 2009</td></tr></table>

I will add a video clip of the drive as soon as I get it uploaded on Utube.

The rain was starting let up in Sturgis when we headed to Lonnie Isam's Competition Distributing facility. http://www.competitiondist.com/index01.htm Lonnie is a well known restorer and manufacturer of pre 1929 Harley-Davidsons and also a builder and sponsor of Harley-Davidson Top Fuel drag racers. He graciously gave us a guided tour of his museum of memorabilia and priceless old pre 1929 Harleys, which included one of first built in 1905. They were incomparable. The restoration and machine shop were beyonds words. His shop creates complete bikes from scratch, with just a motor to start with and they may even cast new cases and barrels for that! Unbelievable! All we could say is .... WOW!!!!

  12. meadow's & moe's roadster = cool lookin' ride~

  13. I am sworn to silience upon threat of being ejected from the club and banned for life..........but I do have a few pics of a smiling Randy and Pam driving my roadster on their way home to Watertown. In fact Randy turned the old girl over 50,000 miles on the way back! Anyway I'm glad to help because he would do the same for me and always is the first to help everyone else too. In fact I remember him TIG welding up my speed bumped oil pan in Vern Tardel's shop in Santa Rosa at midnight. Even though I had to fix it in the Flamingo Motel parking lot I'm actually glad I broke it so we all could hang out with Vern some more! And that was after my heater sprung a leak! Hell, if you drive them they do break once in a while!

By then it was late afternoon and our stomachs were running on empty so we headed down the street for a good meal at the Knuckle Saloon.

From Sturgis we headed up Boulder Canyon to historic Deadwood to give the girls a chance to make some money at the casinos. We caught some more rain on the way there but it quit by the time we hit Deadwood.

After a donation was made to the casinos we headed back to the Crooked Creek motel and campground south of Hill City and called it a day (except for the wild bunch that went back to Hill City to party till midnite at the Mangy Moose Saloon!!)

Now that looks like a hell of a lot of fun!! I haven't been through there since I was a kid. May have to plan a trip and get the kids out there. Beautiful, thanks for the pictures.

  20. On Saturday the clouds cleared out and it was picture perfect topless roadster weather for a full day of cruising the best roads the Black Hills has to offer. So the tops came off and we got ready to head out. Randy and Karen Hedge had the "Welcome LA Roadsters" banner hung on the motel to welcome us for the weekend.
<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td>[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From Lake Area Roadsters Reliability Run in the Black Hills 2009</td></tr></table>

We all lined up for our traditional group photo.
<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td>[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From Lake Area Roadsters Reliability Run in the Black Hills 2009</td></tr></table>

We happened to have our run on the weekend that South Dakota offers free entry to all of its parks, so our first stop was the Sylvan Lake Resort in Custer State Park.
<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td>[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From Lake Area Roadsters Reliability Run in the Black Hills 2009</td></tr></table>

Jan and Teddy model his new googles. It was his break-in run to be a full fledged "Roadster Dawg". He did the whole two day cruise without a whimper!
<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td>[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From Lake Area Roadsters Reliability Run in the Black Hills 2009</td></tr></table>

Next up was the famous Needles Highway. This one of the many tunnels, hairpin and pigtail curves that make this road so cool. We missed the tourist traffic that usually clogs it up and cruised through soaking up the sights. Some tourists actually try to drive their motorhomes through here!
<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td>[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From Lake Area Roadsters Reliability Run in the Black Hills 2009</td></tr></table>

I've got this whole drive on video and will post it when I get it uploaded to Utube.

Next we cruised through Wind Cave National Park with a quick stop for a bathroom break.
<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td>[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From Lake Area Roadsters Reliability Run in the Black Hills 2009</td></tr></table>

We then cruised into Hot Springs in the southern hills to visit Mike Meadows brother Owen who joined us with his flathead powered '40 Ford Tudor.
<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td>[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From Lake Area Roadsters Reliability Run in the Black Hills 2009</td></tr></table>

Then it was back on the open road for lunch in Edgemont in the far southwest corner of the state.
<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td>[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From Lake Area Roadsters Reliability Run in the Black Hills 2009</td></tr></table>

We made the trip to eat at fellow Roadster Club members Randy and Karen Hedge's fifties malt shop "Remember When" http://george-basset.net/rememberwhen.htm. It was well worth the trip with hand made huge burgers that must have weighed at least a full pound. And with the best onion rings and french fries in the state to top it off, we could barely squeeze back into our roadsters! And that was before the malts and ice cream!

    Stay tuned, more to come!

These guys can be a real problem if they get pissed and charge you. This one was giving me the evil eye when I went by. Over a ton of pissed off buffalo that can run up to 35 mph can make some huge dents or worse if you are on a motorcycle. Rick Moe got chased down the road on his Indian Chief one day. Maybe the buffalo have a long memory!

We ended our 200+ mile cruise at Ed and YaVonne Shell's place just outside of Hill City. Ed is recovering from a broken hip so he wasn't able to drive his cool black 392 Hemi powered 4 speed '34 Roadster so Ed made the whole cruise with us in his pickup with YaVonne doing the driving. A little "Roadster Therapy" is just what Ed needed after a long winter in the Hills.

It was the perfect weekend and the best one that I have done yet! It doesn't get any better than this. Friends, good weather, great food and best of all "the drive" made it one to remember. Even Teddy says "If you can't do it in a Roadster, stay on the porch!"

At the end of the day a few problems arose that showed why it's called a Reliability Run. Randy's rear end was getting a little loose and whiny and Dave's fuel pump was ready to be replaced but we all made the whole run and had a great time doing it. Cars that get driven need some fixin now and then!

    That's all folks!
