That Chevy grille also has the ribbed panels below the little end spears eliminated (which is a bit more work than just cutting it off, because there'd be a gap left) and also they must have welded up the original teeth holes on the bar and redrilled to get 5 teeth that are evenly spaced like that. They also cut and bent the surround and the bar to give it a peak in the center to match the Mercury grille, the Chevy surround doesn't have a peak. It also looks like they took a bit of height out of the grille opening, judging by the distance from the top and bottom of the parking light housings.

Someone spent a ton of time and effort, and planning, to get that Chevy grille in there so cleanly. That is far, far from a bolt-on type job.

  2. My dad had a '53 Chevy grille in his '51 Merc, but it was just the bar/teeth in the stock Merc surround not the Chevy shell. That looks pretty killer.

I have a '53 grille with 7 teeth hanging on my office wall that was cut and V'd slightly in the center and the depth of the parking light housings were trimmed way back to fit into what I assume was a long ago Merc custom, although it could have been a different, similar car. I like that bar in a Merc shell. But still an impressive job someone did to use the bar and the shell in that Merc above.

  6. jeffy, that is indeed a Buick, 1950 I believe. Rear window appears to be the stock one for that car albeit leaned forward with the chop. Also cool that it has been turned hardtop!

Went to the Calgary World of Wheels show last night and this was the only custom (that would meet the criteria):

I really like the '57 Ford above, it's got a nice look and uses some parts that are older than the model of car they went onto, which is kinda rare but in this case really works.

  20. I remember it now. Didn't recognize it with the flames. I ruined a couple of Monogram '40 pickups back then trying to replicate it.
