I spent some time this afternoon (after minimal sleep) locking the chassis down to the bench and measuring rails. I found the right rail had a substantial sag, so needed some remedial attention. Had to go out for dinner so will check on progress in the morning........after some night time sleep!

1393902043232.jpg The left hand central section rail boxing plate all tacked in. A lot of mucking about to get it to fit nicely, but should help stiffen the whole platform for independent suspension all round. I want this car to handle, because it will be driven hard!

Left rail pretty much sorted now. Started on the right hand rail. Much grinding and fitting to go but will be worth the effort. Off to work in the morning. We are shutting down the plant for maintenance (3 yearly!) this week, so I may be away for a bit.

Hi nice work so far.. regarding springs in the front end.. I have a xj6 front end in my 35 Pontiac project and over here in aus a lot of jags got v 8 conversion, as a chev or Holden engine is a lot lighter the springs were changed. You could get them from pedders and others. Might be worth a look around and I am told VW shocks will go well with this set up... a lot of info on this topic on ozrodders form
    Cheers

1400478588198.jpg 1400478605426.jpg 1400478645643.jpg I have been a little preoccupied for the last couple of months. We have had a fairly major plant shut down at work for some critical upgrades and maintenance. So lots of long hours and plenty of overtime. It is all back up and running now, but I am a little distracted still. This time with our clubs new bbq trailer. This has taken a couple of years to get done. It is all wired, painted, flooring done. Gas plumbing and cladding to go.

I blew the head gasket in my Mitsubishi ute this week. Also melted a hole in the piston and chewed out between 3 & 4 piston in the head! Another diversion I didn't need!

Head gasket sorted. Doing a slippery clutch and pressure plate today. School vacation in two weeks. My boy wants to get back onto the coupe. Who am I to argue. Bumped into a mate last week, says he has a 327 sitting around. Must chase him up about it so we can mount it and a box in the hole.

I have been cutting some templates for a few boxing plates to stiffen up and replace badness in places. I really want to get back into this job, but I have a few others to finish first. Some parts for my Dads boat and maybe a cradle for another boat. Soon!

Spent some time cutting boxing plates tonight so I can tidy them up tomorrow ready for some more welding soon.
I have found a 327 short block with low miles. No heads means I can put some alloy goodies on there.

1406708929303.jpg 1406708955132.jpg 1406708988875.jpg I had a really productive day today. Plenty of grinding to clean up the boxing plates I cut yesterday. By end of today I have run out of gas for the welder after filling the removed cross member holes, fitted crush tubes for the ifs, cold galv paint on the inside areas that won't be accessible later.
Tomorrow....more gas and a night shift..... Bugger!

Not mine, but for reference of body mount positions etc. Stolen off google images. A nice tidy job all the same.

    Right! What next?

1408253241679.jpg 1408253262919.jpg I stripped the paint from the front fenders last week. Man there was a lot of paint and a few hidden sins! Some patches with lead filler, some with plastic filler.
Today my son helped lift the fenders down and pull the inner fenders off so I can clean up the inside ready for weld repairs and a few mods.

  21. You gonna split the guards and add a wee bit of width to them Wade ? Is the Jag width wider then the original axle ?

    Well spotted!

Yes the jag is a smidgen wider. But because I have set the chassis so low I can't narrow the beam without all sorts of issues. So yes I have decided to sneak a bit into the fenders in a couple of places. In the peak and valley. When you see the fenders up close you would understand why it doesn't worry me too much to chop em up. I plan to make new running boards and have them wider too. The existing ones are in a state anyway. If this was a pristine body I probably would be doing things different.........but it ain't!

  23. Yeah, but just as well we are hot rodders though as what we think is rough but usable , vintage restoration guys would walk, no run away from as too hard. I split the guards on the Anglia was building adding 2" to the front and 3" to the rear and they came out not too bad.

I finished cleaning the inside of the front fenders and did some more tidying on the chassis. Tomorrow, more of the same. It's looking too wet to be doing anything outside anyway!

1408521166119.jpg Another successful day on the same tools. Dropped the diff out, pulled the boxing plates off to install crush tubes for the diff mounts. While in there put some paint on bits that won't see the light of day again. Reinstated the boxing plates after filling a heap of unusable holes with weld. I have also made a replacement cross member to go ahead of the diff. Am about to finish that and clean up for the night. Work tomorrow.

Don't know what your plans are, but a removable panel in the floor metal over the diff would make maintenance access much easier down the road.

  28. Can't sleep, so I jumped on here, and caught up with your progress. Good to see your not letting winter slow you down, like it has me.

The way I set it up I can drop the complete diff out to service.
