Me too. Really bad in my left ear, not so bad in my right. I went to a specialist here in Omaha, The Ear Institute or something like that, because I was worried, they gave me pointers as to dealing with it. The tests they did were kind of cool though, they gave me a sheet with a chart for each ear on it that illustrates exactly what frequencies I have a tough time with. I am 26 years old, and though I have lived a VERY hard life, this could have been totally prevented with the proper hearing protection. It makes my life difficult, and makes it difficult for those around me to adjust to as well. I constantly have to have people repeat themselves to the extent of bothering them, I can't help it. It is depressing knowing that this will never go away, and I am still young, so I may have a long time to deal with it. ALWAYS WEAR EAR PLUGS, NO EXCEPTIONS, EVER....

I have a lot of trouble understanding people when there is background noise. Conversation at parties is an excercise in futility. I just smile and grin alot, rather than answer wrong and seem dumber than I allready am. The other thing is, I have a tough time understanding a female voice on the telephone. I have to ask them to repeat stuff way too often. Got called for jury duty several years ago. I noticed I could understand the lawyers fine if they spoke while facing me but, if they spoke while walking away it was muffled and jumbled up. Must be the frequency of the loss I have. I may be a Closet Lip Reader. CLRs (TM ) unite! lol

Yep, have it. Sometimes it'll make me really edgy. Sounds like when you are inside and it's summer time and the locusts are buzzing away outside. Most times I notice it very little but other times, it is very distinct, like right now.

yep , I've got the ringing in the ears for a few decades.

    hearing loss too.

Back ground noise comes in well , most voices drift in & out.

people can make jokes about it till they have to deal with this shit every day

Old Fart ? Somebody say Old Fart ? That's me ; speak up, can't hear you with that dammed keyboard clicking... Mine started on a Farmall 'M' with no muffler, aided and abetted by shootin' in and out of the military (dang muskrats in the pond and cats now), hot rod cars, choppers (they don't really fly, they beat the air into submission...). Huh, can't hear you, and speak up are among my most frequently used phrases. Crowds, bars, parties- all lost causes for me; can't hear shit over the background noise. Maybe I snored too loud- I have sleep apnea and use a C-PAP at night...

If love is a pain in the ass, maybe you're doing it wrong...

Last year I had an ear infection that wouldn't clear up, then the vertigo attacks started. I've got it in my left ear only and have around a 60% hearing loss. I'm currently under a consultant for it, I'm waiting to go back after having a MRI scan.
They think I've got menieres disease - take a look here http://www.menieresinfo.com/ it seems theres not that much known about what causes it. As you say dropping salt intake appears to help some people, but not others.
It seems it affects people in different ways, so different things can help cure it.
I'm taking Betahistine Hydrochloride (known as Serc) for it, whats wierd is I had some from one manufacturer that did a good job, when it ran out I went to a different pharmacy and was given another brand - these don't work at all.

There are surgery options, I don't know how common it is to do these in the US but from what I can gather its not that common in the UK.

  14. Twat you say? I cunt hear you!?

I've had it for years, I have to drown it out with constant sound. During the day that means radio or tv, in the shop either the tools or the radio make enough noise but during the night I either need a fan, or the AC fan going constantly. I have to have something to drown it out or I go ape shit. If it's totally quiet the ringing gets louder, and louder, and louder, until it vibrates my skull and numbs my brain..then the slightest sound and it goes back down to do it all over again. If I have my white noise, I'm good.

Sounds blend together often. Like in resturants there are so many sounds on so many different frequencies they all run together and I can't hear shit of what someone is saying to me.

I'm not deaf or hard of hearing, I can hear the smallest whisper from across the room.

Thing is I often tell people "I'm sorry? What was that? I'm hard of hearing" because it's easier than saying "my ears don't process all these sounds independantly, it just makes one globbed tone out of it"

I think it's a pretty common thing, most people that have it probably don't realize it, just think having shit on all the time is habbit. If you climb the walls when it's quiet and the ringing tries to crack your skull like a crystal wine glass, then buddy, chances are you have it.

I bet nearly all these car guys have it. From loud stereos to loud pipes and a lot of these guys are musicians as well which makes it even worse. You spend your life listening to loud shit, it'll happen. If it doesn't make you deaf, it gives you this shit.

When I was a kid I used to like my stereos loud enough to make your ears bleed. Now I like my cars loud enough you can feel them from a block away.

I wear ear protection when working in the shop now so I don't make it worse.

I have had it for a few years now. For sleeping I learned that the best thing to do is to sleep on your back. It significantly reduces the volume at which you hear the ringing...when you sleep on your side the pillow has the effect of blocking of any other sound into that ear so you end up only hearing the ringing which seems to amplify it.

I'm 23 and get the thing where you lose sound completely in one ear, suddenly, and hear a ringing souns too. Scary when it happens, but often goes after a few minutes. Makes you feel dizzy too. I push around rattling trollies at work on concrete sometimes, aswell as going to the races. I use earpugs for the dragstrip but you don't even thinkabout it with things like pushing trollies. The high pitch does the damage I think.

  17. I agree with Cris, sleeping on your back helps a lot. As I've grown older I've gone from a comatose sleep to changing positions a couple of times but I always start out on my back.

I prefer laying on my back when I bang hot little hot rod chicks too. Problem is I have a shortage of those, if anyone knows a cure for that let me know.

Put me on the list too. It sounds like a constant air hose leak, worse when I'm pissed off and the blood pressure's up. As a kid I had lots of ear infections. I'm 55 and about 4 or 5 years ago I was driving down the road and my left ear went dead, couldn't hear anything. I went to my Dr., who is also a friend so I believe him, he said there's nothing to do for it. He even said hearing aids wouldn't help. Some of my hearing came back, but it's bad enough I can't hear the dial tone of a phone in my left ear. I usually have to SEE what someone is saying to hear them, like some others have said. Quit salt too, except on french fries, can't eat them without. AZ Geezer, I too would like to hear what you have to say, PUN intended. Some times I have to sleep with the TV on for noise, never tried a fan. Good topic.

OK, here's a brief reply........for what it's worth. All of you.........GET A HEARING TEST!!!!!! Avoid anyone who's high pressure. Many places will test your hearing for FREE. Instead of letting this situation get worse and worse, fight back. If you need hearing aids, GET THEM! The longer you wait, the less effective they will be and the longer it will take for them to help you. DO NOT shop for the cheapest hearing aids you can find, get quality! This is a health issue, not a toy. Remember this, cheap hearing aids aren't good, and good hearing aids aren't cheap.

I've told you of my hearing loss. With my hearing aids, I function well in noise, in restaurants, in meetings, etc. Do I miss words, HELL YES! but I can follow conversations pretty well. I don't have to lip read to know what someone is saying to me.

Enough of my preaching! If you don't know who to go to, PM me and I'll refer you to someone you can trust in your area. I know people in most parts of the country that are ethical (and some who are not).

Sorry for the rant, but several of you asked.......

Yeah, I've got it too. Mine (ringing) came from Five years on the flight line in the Air Force during Viet Nam, downloading aerial imagery (exposed film, etc) from reconnaisance jets while theri engines were still running. It's been tough to live with, and I hate it most of all when a cute lady says someting to me with a twinkle in her eye, and I haven't got a clue what she said. Bummer!

I figure I'm listening to the echo of the unmuffled irrigation engines, grinders, etc of my youth.

800 cid Minneapolis Moline 6 cyl at full throttle, no muffler, no exhaust pipe at 3' while checking the oil does things to your ears.

All I've lost is upper freqs but when thing are quiet I can still hear those engines:(

Jee! I thought I didn't fit in with H.A.M.B.'ers all that well. Looks like a new majority here, The Deaf Hamber's, and I am a member. Had Tinnitus since a 9MM went of next to my right ear at age 19 or 20. Got Meniers(Spellin) in 94. Went through all the dizzy (with out alkeyhol) sick as hell. Got hearing aids in 94, both ears, 89 % and 86 % loss in left and right ear. I sleep with TV on to dround out the ringing. No it will not go away when your hearing goes away. The ringing just keeps going and going.

One reason I like the hamb so much is I can listen and talk back to anyone, no mater how low they talk, or at what tone. I just can't see their lips moving.

Air tools, body hammers, and shooting guns all my life took out my hearing. Very seldom did I use hearing protection. It just didn't look Kool. These big globs of plastic hanging out my ears look great:D

  25. Tinnitis is a symtom of Asprin overdose.

It can also be caused by other medicatons, for some people.

Yep, I've had it most of my life. ( 70 yrs. old ) When I finally ask a
doc about it, he asked how I was dealing with it. I said OK so far, but
that it gets louder some days. He said I was just imagining it. Sure glad
he was able to crawl inside and listen for a few days ! He said it was one of the major causes of people ending up in a mental ward. So, don't
let it get to you. It's probably just some wack'o space rodder trying to
get through. It also helps me tune my guitar without any other aids. After all, lots of people love the sound of crickets at night. Helps them
get to sleep. It lets you know your alive and kickin'.

Maybe old but very viable and important. Especially if you have it. 3yrs now, that I have noticed it.

  30. Friggen ancient thread but I have to say that stuff and a fan at night works!

Who else not only has the ringing but the sharp pain as well?
