Work. Children's. Travel for work. Keeping busy. Got a few minutes today. Mr. Pharis had excellent ideas. That is a "C", generally a D fan, but C's get degrees...or is that the other way around. Either way, for 183 cubes and 2,000 rpm...a "C" is still probably on par. Happy Father's Day.

    Hey guys,

I'm looking for info / history for the Riley Iron flathead . Any information or leads to sources of info would be appreciated.

    Dan,
I picked up a Riley flathead several years ago (in Orange Cali of all places) I have been running it on a B engine that is in my Cabriolet. It is my understanding that they are few and far-in-between. I had sent photos to Yapp when I obtained it and he stated it "was one of three" he knew of. It is my understanding that not many were cast. I have never found any Riley literature for the head or much additional information. When I am at events it mostly receives a pass by car type onlookers
It is insane how it runs. With a Stype 340 cam, stock intake and exhaust valves and the intake carburation pictured, it dyno'd at 68 hp to the rear wheels...that was thru a driveline OD as well. I have put tens of thousands of miles on it and several other engine set ups. This car with this head is my favorite to drive.
I believe that it CC'd and figured to 5.2:1 compression ratio cabby engine latest.jpg Riley head 3 next attempt.jpg Riley head 2 next attempt.jpg Riley head 1 resized next attempt.jpg
That's all I know and the relief in the head is at the "back of the valve"....away from the cylinder......that 'there is no flow off the back of the valve' discussion....
According to the V8 Flathead guru, Joe Abbin, it shouldn't do anything....but don't argue with George
It will be interesting if you find any additional information.
What's the story on the one you have pictured?

The most interesting things pop up on this thread. Truly.

I have a Riley ad in my files that mentions the Flathead.

  9. I like the air filter housing. I need something similar for the T as there's not much room beneath the hood. Any idea what it's off?

it is an air cleaner horn off of a M-38 Jeep they had remote mounted air cleaners
    https://www.quadratec.com/products/...MItpjz9Z7lhgMViM_CBB1OqQFqEAQYAyABEgJN9PD_BwE
    is one source
I modify the outlet to fit the carburetor ...but that is using a different air horn than the one in the link
I bought some off of ebay and they were poor quality...I complained to the seller and they sent me some more of the same quality...they just need sealed up where the Pakistani fellows spot welded them together.
    The air cleaner is a K&N RU-910

thank you for this.... you and I have had the discussion that around 6:1 compression seems to be a magic number for good, reliable performer in a Model A/B road engine.

  13. I was going to say I'll check Iandola's book when I get home, but I think this is what I was thinking of.
Not cool to hear Yapp say there's only 3 he knows of... that severely limits my chances of finding one! After all, our youngest son is named Riley for a reason- it's because of George. ;)

Not much to post- the boys put a deck on the oldest's Model A speedster project. Going to order the bucket seats this week.
Since we are using a commercial cowl, does anyone know what subrails it needs to mount 'just the cowl'? We fit it up to the frame and it's pretty obvious there is something missing...I looked in Snyder's catalog this morning but it just shows a black line on the drawing where the subrails are. Not much help. New to As, sorry if that's a dumb question.

    Very Respectfully,
    jason

Interestingly the lionspeed heads have a similar shaped combustion chamber with a different plug location, the iron lionspeed 3 ran very well on my hopped up banger in my town sedan, and the alloy lionspeed 4 runs exceptionally well on the burtz engine in my mums sport coupe, both engines run smoother than a stocker and both have plenty of get up and go Screenshot_20240619_023502_Gallery.jpg

    windup toy,
Having experienced your ride, the Riley head and your dialed in setup just seems to have a little something extra over other heads with the same CR and basic setup. I'm admittedly biased, although the dyno seems to agree?
    cheers,

Thanks for the info on the Riley flathead. This is why I like this place.

  17. After a long hiatus; I'm finally checking in!

By the way; who all are showing up for the F.A.S.T. Time Trials at the Santa Margarita Ranch this June 29th?

Seth Hammond' the 300 mph LSR racer will be showing up with a new trials car. Seth's builder/mechanic, "Smoky" Alleman from nearby Atascadero will be on hand. Those whom don't know of "Smoky": he is a former Indianapolis 500 mechanic/crewman; including the Vels Parnelli Teams. "Smoky" restored all of the late Parnelli Jones' collection of race cars. Chip Foose too has "Smoky" maintain his Kurtis-Offy Midget. So "Be There or Be Square"!

  19. Yup! This is the Dreyer engine that "Smoky" built for Seth. If so; the car can only run for time not competition. It does not comply to current F.A.S.T. regs! I'm going to a meeting today at which "Smoky" will be. I'll ask him if this is that car. It very well might be a Model B based motor. we'll see.

  20. That sure looks to be B based motor
Interesting the crank fire ignition sensor and the mag
    Hmmmmm

  21. Interestingly, there wasn't much more information in the "George Riley Racing Scrapbook" on the flatheads he produced. In addition to what has already been posted is these few words/pictures. It appears per the text there was few of them made, and he set to work on the OHV design quickly.

    Please see attached pictures.

  22. I stand corrected! "Smoky" told me that Seth's engine is a McDowell.
It used to be owned by Lee Hammock!

The event at June 29th costs $10 for adults, including crew. (children under 12 free) Race car entry is $75 ($65 for those who have pre-registered)

  23. John,
Seth does have some really unique cars and a crane or two.
Going to miss the Time trials, working on putting up a new shop.

How many D. O. McDowells are out there? I once had a front cam drive for one, but swapped it for Two Daytons back in 1974. DSCF2406.JPG DSCF2404.JPG DSCF2403.JPG

Still at it. Had a trans mishap while taking the truck out for a few test runs. More to come next month.

On a positive note a friend found a vintage high performance A engine. If it’s to be sold it’s his.
