1954....ready to pull out to the Bonneville Nationals from home. The Cal-Loui is now #96, and sports a new paint job and sponsorship.

I think that this is Harold Post's streamliner, from Orange CA or nearby. It once ran Doug Hartlet's Chrysler.

In the pits, looks like lifting or re-installing one of the engines. I think that's young Gary Lindsley working the chains. All OSHA approved...

Jim ended up driving the Cal-Loui to an average of 202.07 at the 54 Nationals. First roadster to officially hit the 200 mph mark! A couple more pictures from that year in the pits. I believe the car was destroyed in a towing accident at some point after this.

Thanks, Guys! It's fun and pleasantly distracting to do some research and get these out for all to see. More to come...

If I had just one wish I'd go for a time machine to take me back to the late '40's early '50's so I could experience real hot rodding not just the ordering stuff out of a catalog that passes for hot rodding in many cases. Of course that is never going to happen so I'll have to survive on posts such as this. Thanks for taking the time to post all the photos and commentary.

Jim Lindsley's sons...Gary, Larry & Fred were all involved in the racing from an early age. They went on to do their own racing, with Larry setting some incredible records into the 90's.

So when Gary Lindsley was around 10 and hanging out at Bonneville with the family, his mom gave him a Brownie Hawkeye and told him to go at it. These following photos were still in the original stapled print book as you would get them back from the drug store. The first ones are from 1955. Help me identify race cars as we go along. From Gary's Brownie.....Miss 400 - This slick chop-top ’34 Ford was the C. R. Cook’s 1955 Bonneville entry called Miss 400. A Chrysler Hemi supplied power. The car was one of ten entries in Class D Competition Coupe and Sedan that was after the 1954 record of Don Bishop’s at 171.57 mph. Our Miss ran 188.58 mph but had to settle for second in class behind Art Chrisman at 195.86 mph. Art went on to up the record to 190.839 mph, and our car went back home to Pomona. -quote from the owner, CR Cooke

Edit per Jimmy B - "Miss 400" is the former "So-Cal" coupe. John Moxley bought it after the crash and rebuilt it.

    #180 modified coupe...

Edit per Jimmy B - 180 is the Jado coupe
Additional from 296Ardun-The JADO Special, run by James Kambour and Don Apenfels (JADO the first two letters of their first names). It ran a blown flathead and used an aluminum frame. It still exists in an Oregon museum.

We are still here loving every post on this great time frame in history. Most of us can't comment because we were too young at the time to know these cars. But a lot of people are reading and enjoying the history lesson.
