Someone mentioned that you can't convert a governor drive as it isn't the same size of gear as the crank gear.

Can anyone confirm whether someone can do that or not?

 

Has to run crank speed, so the gear must be 25 teeth. If so, it will work as a side drive.

 

Some old tractor mags had gear reduction built into the mag if I am right?

 

The mag still has to run crank speed. Yes, there is a 2:1 reduction in platform mount mags to make the rotor run at ½ crank speed. Mags like a Vertex or Wico must run at cam speed- that why they run off the distributor drive gear train.

 

Dan is correct. Any 4 stroke engine, distributor or magneto, the rotor has to make exactly one revolution for each two revolutions of the crankshaft.
