It's called an ENGINE...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Junkyard Dog 32, Feb 6, 2007.

  1. Ever notice how many people call an engine a "motor"...?

Who started that shit... Richard Petty...?

Motors spin your heater fan and your windshield wipers and your 8-track tape player... and the wobbly thing inside your wife's plastic boyfriend.
Engines consume fuel and air and burn it to make explosions which move a piston on a shaft to turn a crankshaft, whereby, turning reciprocation into rotational power...

    ...and while I'm at it...

It's called a rocker arm cover, dickhead. :D

Don't know who started it, but John Force is the biggest advocate of blown motors.

I think my wife likes her motor better then my engine under my valve cover.

  5. I agree with you Joe, I was told the difference by a bunch of hot rodders at a very early age.

And it's not an explosion, it's a rapid burn of the fuel.

    Actually it's BOTH.

An engine transforms thermal energy into motion.

A motor is anything that delivers power in a rotary motion.

  10. Um... General Motors?

    Motive power=motion=motor.

Well, here's what Dictionary.Com says about Motors and Engines:

1.mo·tor [IMG] [IMG][IMG] /ˈmoʊ[IMG]tər/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[moh-ter] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1.a comparatively small and powerful engine, esp. an internal-combustion engine in an automobile, motorboat, or the like.

    2. en·gine [IMG] [IMG][IMG] /ˈɛn[IMG]dʒən/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[en-juh[IMG]n] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun .a machine for converting thermal energy into mechanical energy or power to produce force and motion.

So both are correct terms for what power our rods. Smokey Yunick called 'em motors and that's good enough for me..:)

Thats one of my Dad's pet peeves! Everytime he hears that on TV he cringes. As he says, "The motor is what starts the engine."

In the early days, automobiles were nothing more than "motorized" carriages. Not all were powered by internal combustion engines. Many were steam powered or electric powered.

My guess is that the term "motor" dates back to those days.

Oh, oh, here we go ...

    The thing on the front of a motor; :D that has belt groves to drive accesories;
is a HARMONIC DAMPER; NOT a "balancer!"

This should start the shit flying!! :D
    (we'll find out how many "motors" don't!! :D :D )

It's actually a harmonic dampener, not damper.

when I was about 12 I wanted to fix a remote control airplane I had salvaged. I saved my money, went to the hobby store, and asked if this motor (gas burning) could be repaired. The owner proceeded to tell me how he would not work on a MOTOR but if I had an engine to give him it would cost 700 dollars to make it run. He was quite rude to a kid who wanted to fix a plane. Needless to say, he didn't ever get any business from me.

That shop is now out of business and I can rebuild my own fuckin MOTOR. Dick.
