Customs Yes, it's a '56 Ford!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1stGrumpy, Sep 26, 2020.

  1. Headed up to Seneca, Mo. this afternoon to look at a '56 Ford Fairlane 2 door sedan and it appears to be in pretty decent condition, so I bought it. It need's attention in a few area's but don't they all? Strong running 312 with a Fordomatic. Stock springs in front and 2" blocks in the rear. Nosed and decked with handles and badges shaved, '55 hood and rear bumper, '59 Merc skirts and a nice interior. It'll make a cool cruiser! 56447537_130837534723455_6497849970509479936_n.jpg 55914243_130837438056798_7320550170079264768_n.jpg 56510880_130837388056803_2907452173719699456_n.jpg 55925688_130837504723458_7324609180461957120_n.jpg

Never mind I just read your last post on back in black. Sometimes one has to go down the road to make room for the next! don't you hate it when that happens !;);) lol Larry

  11. Yes! Gotta get rid of that rectangular mirror and add some round peep's. I already have a pretty good size list of things that I am going to add or change.

  12. I had some pictures of the interior and engine but they somehow got lost inside my computer 119996246_798544527624082_1622178494446441851_n.jpg 120087367_668279450762621_7219921144005283742_n.jpg 120157468_3381751408572077_8643304149399543794_n.jpg , hate it when that happens! Here's a few that show a little bit of the interior...

  20. That is a nice looking car. I like it. My first car was a 56 2 door post. Nosing that hood takes a lot more work than on a 55.

GREAT car, and congrats on the addition!

You could easily take this car to the next level with basic stuff. It looks like it already has the east coast thing going on with the cruiser skirts and spots, so I say keep going with it! WWWs and a better selection of caps, lake pipes, and you're there! Wheels and tires would absolutely make this car

A metallic maroon paint job, maybe some tasteful gold scallops, done - an award winning mild custom. Nice car.....

Not too shabby !......we used to say that about a car or girl that we thought was really cool .
Had a friend in the early 60s with a 56 soft top 312 auto.....some of the Chevy guys were shocked when he blew their doors off. Love those Y-Blocks.......

  26. Well I still haven't found those pictures of the interior and motor. So I took some more to send to my insurance company and post on here... 100_1898.JPG 100_1897.JPG

  29. Saturday...
When I went and looked at the '56, I could see that the battery that was in it was way to small and that it could barely crank over the motor. Also, once the engine started I saw that the choke wasn't working and that it had some serious vacuum leaks.

    Sunday...
Put the battery on the charger and let it percolate all day. Sprayed starting fluid around the intake and carburetor base and tightened all the loose bolts (intake and carb). That helped a bunch but it still had some leaks.

    Monday...
Spent most of the day dealing with my insurance company, revenue department and part's people. Added the '56 to my policy, transferred tags and title and tried to order a new battery and intake manifold gaskets. Told the parts guy (at O'Reilly's) what I wanted and that the car was a '56 Ford Fairlane. First he told me that he couldn't look the parts up because the computer wouldn't go back that far. He managed to ask one of the older guy's and he showed him how to find parts for older vehicle's. Then he couldn't find how to look up the battery so I gave him the group number, he then wanted to know if it was a 2 door or 4 door...... that's when I left!
That was all for Monday since the youngest grandson had a football game at 6:00 pm. They won 8 to 6! Go Rattlers...

    Tuesday...
Went to Bumper to Bumper and got a new battery, cables and ordered the intake manifold gaskets. Put the new battery and cables in. Checked for more loose nut's, bolt's, swapped the license plate's and did a lot of minor thing's inside the car and out.

    Wednesday...
Went back to Bumper to Bumper and picked up the new intake manifold gaskets, then went back home and removed the carb and intake. Found that the valley cover was loose and had been leaking oil so I cleaned that mess all up and tightened it and the distributor clamp. Whoever worked on it last wasn't much at tightening nut's and bolt's but he sure was thorough at putting gasket cement on everything! Most of the afternoon was spent cleaning all the glued on gasket material off the parts. I did manage to get the intake back on before I called it a day.
Oh, sometime in the past, someone decided to get rid of the 4 barrel carb and put a Motorcraft 2100 2 barrel on it using one of those Mr Gasket 2 to 4 barrel adapter's turned upside down. I most likely will put the big 2 barrel back on for now but I need to take care of the non-op automatic choke. Will also replace fuel hoses and filters.

Okay, now you all are up to date. Granted, that isn't a whole lot of work in 4 day's but you have to remember that I am 72 years old and it take's me half the morning just to drink some coffee, take my pills, take a shower and dress plus make my way out to the shop and then try to remember why I walked out there in the first place!
