Island Dragway Vintage Photo Thread

couple shots of my buddy, Dick belfatti's " shadow" dragster taken at island one is from around 1961 the k-88 rail (taken by rich venza) and the other is the shadow with boby vodnick driving the fred allen built shadow around '64-ish.

Island still has bracket racing

 

We raced there in the 60s, still do, same cars. Our home track. The wood guard rails are long gone replaced by steel. The Pits were paved many years ago. The track was shaved (made smoother) and re paved recently. Other wise it is the same as in the 60s. Traction, no problem. Our hot rod corvettes.

 

Great Pictures Guys! Keep Em coming! I'm living in Colorado now, and it's nice to see this stuff from back home. They had a website that had some cool old photos, but I see that it has been suspended.

Here is my dad racing his 32 in 1965

 

I spent most Sundays from 1960 to 1964 at Island. Most of the time running my '56 Chevy F/Gasser. Also had the foresight to take a bunch of photos.

I'm hapy to share them with the world...

Thank God you guys had the foresight to take these pics, they're great !!!
Too bad there isn't an east coast drag racing museum or even a group of guys into the past of Jersey drag racing, much like the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club !!!

Found out today from a few racers that ISLAND HAS CLOSED IT DOORS .... GONE OUT OF BUSINESS .. ;-(

I heard the same thing...Rumors...Back Taxes and a problem with the septic leaking into the river ( really a ditch ) EPA ? Sad very Sad. I first raced there in 1973

 

2003 nostalgia drags...

 

Went there the first time in 1960, the year it opened. Hopefully an interested party buys the track and keeps it going.

In my old stuff, I found this two-page newsletter "Competition Copyright" from Island Dragway. This was a handout toward end of 1962 season.
