I am thinking this is a Ford 9 inch but the welded seam all the way to the backing plate is not something I have seen before. I am looking at this on Craigslist and I do not have better pictures yet. I'm sure it is not the rearend that came in this frame. Any ideas? Thanks
Identification on an 8 or 9 inch Ford is usually done by showing the front pumpkin which has a separate pinion bearing flange which is shielded which makes the bottom two bolts on the 9" removeable only by open end wrenches.
Well there you go. You said that like you would know. I could tell easy if I could see the front, but I cant. Why are you so sure, what gave it away for you?
If the rear of the housing is completly round and smooth it just may be a 8 3/4 chy. Can't see enought to tell !
This isn't a joke but there is also a 9 3/8 (or something close) out there. I had one once, came out of a Lincoln if I remember right. The housing and axles are the same as a 9" but the center section is different. Good luck finding gears for 9 3/8". I can't remember how to tell the difference though....google might help. Hmmmm, I'm thinking the 9 3/8 had a horizontal strengthening rib on the carrier that curved down at the left end of the rib. More is coming back to me...there was the "mustang" housing and then there was a beefier housing that came in larger cars. The 9 3/8 would not physically fit inside the "mustang" housing, that;s how i came to find out about them. Check the bolt pattern, could this be a fifties Chev rear?
The 9-3/8" rear only differs very slightly from the 9" rear. There is a small curved cutout in the flange where the center section mounts, in both places where the ring gear passes by it, for clearance. You can put a 9-3/8" center section in a 9" housing if you grind it for clearance. You can put a 9" center section in a 9-3/8" housing with no trouble at all. As far as I know, and have seen, all of the 9-3/8" rears are 31-spline. They are otherwise indistinguishable from the 9", except for the wheel bolt pattern, which would be the "big-car" or truck pattern, not 5 on 4-1/2". That one looks like a Chrysler to me, from those angles.
Mid 50's Olds/Pontiac. The housing construction and the hint of a rib at the left front . The flat style u-joint flange. jerry
The house does not look like a factory 9 or 8 inch ford. But there are some co. building housing. I would have to see the front to make sure.
kinda looks Mopar-ish 8.75 having a better look at the front will help..but as enjenjo says..not a ford 8 or 9
a lincoln 9 3/8 housing will take a 9 inch chunk,but all I've dealt with a 28 splines and the Hollander agrees.
Im with the guy voting early GM, looks like an Olds pumpkin, Your'e gaming or you would have shown us the diff.
No game. I have emailed the seller but no response. I think for the most part most agree its not a 9 inch.
It's not a Mopar 8.75 either--Mopar housings don't have a welded seam running lengthwise on the tubes. -Brad
All the 9 3/8 ford chunks out of full size mid 60s Ford and stationwagons I have removed were 31 spline and 5 on 4 1/2 boltpattern. The Lincolns of that era may be 5 on 5. Fed
Yeah, '61-'69 Lincolns are 5 on 5", In case anyone cares. I've never saw a 9 3/8" in any thing other than a Lincoln however, interesting.
There are more for 9 3/8. Lowest ratio I have had was 3.50. They came in several mid '60s Galaxies, and similar cars.
