Is there a good donor fender for fender flares?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hudsoncustom, May 15, 2007.

  1. I'd like to add some fender flares to the front of the Hudson.

I really like the look of the Hirohata Merc's fenders, or the Buster Litton Ford.

Any ideas on a food donor fender for the flares? I know the Litton Ford used Studebaker fenders, but I've been looking for a reasonable pair for a year now, and haven't turned up anything.

What I'd like to find is something out of a relatively modern car....i.e. a fender I can pick up for cheap.

What have you all used? Any ideas?

all you need it the lip so you could buy a rusty or bent fender should not cost too much.

    Hey,

In the 70's, when the "Van thing" was all the shit, we used small o.d.
e.m.t. If ya slice this stuff length wise, after bending your arch, you
can varie the shape to your design. Also look for small square tube-
ing, and again, slice it length wise to adjust its shape to your design.
Ya can also make "Flares" with a bead roller and sheet stock, cut in
an arch the same shape as your wheel house.
Yeah, none of the above ideas are as easy as scalppin' a fender and
squirt-gun welding, than muddin' one on to your existing fender, but
all are very doable with out much skill.

I used the steel fender flares that are under the plastic flares off of a early 90s escort gt on the front of a 49 chevy. The fenders themselves were not in that good of shape but the flares were so the junkyard gave me the fenders for free. The metal is a little thin but is workable if you are patient.

  6. I like the 54 ford fender flares pictured above, but I imagine those will be expensive too...

Most of the modern cars I see have a hard line at the top of the flare, and the flare bulges out from the fender instead of sweeps out of the fender...if you know what I mean.

I'll hit the junkyards and see what I can find.

Flat-Top-Bob (Owens Salvage) is sending me a pair of 52-54 Ford flairs to use on my 50 Merc. Not as expensive as you may think.

  8. Thanks for the tip mazdaslam...I'll see if he's got more.

I have some rusty Stude fenders, if all you need is 3-4 inches of the fender lip I can cut them out for you. The car is at a property about an hour from me so it might be a few weeks before I go there again.
