Hot Rods Is the 1938 ford standard really the ugliest fat fender car?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by crustz, Jul 12, 2015.

  1. People who think '38 Standards are ugly just make them more affordable for people who like them. People who think '38 and '39 Ford trucks are ugly have never kept me from enjoying my '38. I would love to have a '38 Standard, any body style.

Ok, I'll weigh in on this. I think the 38 standard has much better looking front sheet metal than the deluxe. In fact I prefer the 38 standard to any 37.

  3. I always thought the nose of the 38 Deluxe/39 Standards look like A Right Whale

I'll agree that many of the Chrysler products and Studebakers were a lot uglier.
And a 1941 Ford is cute Ginger!

38's are good looking cars, it's just the 39's and 40's are beautiful cars. 38's got overlooked.

Ford never built an UGLY car....club coupes (any year) all need some liposuction on the back of thier roof and 41 front ends were a LITTLE "homely " but the late fourtie's mopars were CRYING for a facelift imho......( (I too LOVE Ryan's coupe.....God he has nice toys!!)

Nup, 37's and 38 Standards are fine by me. Never liked the 38's or 39 Standards ............................ but I am warming to them finally.
Still like the earlier ones out of the two though. JMO
Of course, I understand if others don't agree - that's their right too.

  18. I actually read once that the real reason that they got overlooked had to do with being underpowered. I don't really understand the ugly or the under powered. Ugly is a personal thing and they look fine to me once properly modified, and the underpowered is just a transplant away.

  19. Hey now! That might be taking it just a bit too far (you put enough lipstick on a pig and she'll get a dance before last call)

  20. I like the look of the '38 Standard and that may be shifting my bias for my bucket list car from a '40 Deluxe. Probably more '38s around as well.

NO, and neither is the 41! I actually like the 41 a lot!

The 42 OTOH, that's my vote.

From another post, on another thread, but the same truck in question:
I like them, the are good salt of the earth honest work trucks, I don't find them beautiful like a Art Deco 46 Chevy, but they are dependable like a golden retriever, and that I like in a truck!!

Said it ones and will say it again, that is a very honest work truck!

It's a work truck, and the get more beatings then Cher(!!) and still great you with a happy face!
They are meant to be used/abused till the edge of three life, rebuild and repeat!

It dosent matter that much, and like most things with hot rods ; fix it or just use as is!

I am currently building a 38 Standard. Actaully sold a 39 delux for the opportunity to build this Standard. Here is a little sneak peak of the car sitting in a storage unit, waiting for me to finish the cahssis. 21 Stud Flathead, Hexagon speed equipment....... Soon, very soon!!!
