I want to add an under dash mp3 player in my '62 mercury. I thought it was a 6v system and was planning on getting a 6v>12v converter to run it.
Today I was looking around under the dash and I noticed on the original radio it has 12volt Neg ground stamped on it. Also what I think is the wiper motor which also says 12volt.
There is an FM converter in the glove box which I will no longer need. Can I use the power from that to run the new receiver?

Soooo...I've got a 12 volt system than? How can you tell?

Does the battery have six cells or three? Six cells is 12v, 3 is 6v. You should be able to use the same power lead. Why don't you trace it to see where it's hooked up? Probably to the fuse box...

The power to the FM converter is tapped in from the power to the original radio.

Ford products after 1955 are 12V negative ground, 1955 and earlier are 6V positive ground.
GM cars vary in the conversion from 6volt negative ground to 12V negative ground, Chevy in 1955, Buick in 1954.
