    50chevy -

    the trucks w/ the horizontal grilles are 48-50
    the ones w/ the toothy grilles are 51-52

    53-56 were a complete redesign.

    the 48-52 trucks are really really cramped on the inside. if you like the overall look of the truck but would like something a little more comfortable to drive, look into 53-56 fords or 47-55 1st series chevys.

    hope this helps,

    First two are 51-52. The toothy grille is the giveaway. The 3rd one in red primer is a 48-50. All look to be F1's, which are the 1/2 ton models. The F2 is a 3/4 ton model. Basically:
    F1 = F100 = F150
    F2 = F200 = F250
    F3 = F300 = F350

    There are other differences like the bed. The early ones had the raised panel like the red primer 48. Around mid-year 50 they changed to the flat panel. Because of the flat panel, they changed the rear fenders. The mounting flange has a step in it on the early ones with the raised panel. The cabs are basically the same 48-52 except for the dash.

    Personally, I like the 48-50 trucks. The grille is better looking to me. I don't like the toothy grin.

    I hope this helps.

    I really like the 1st series chevy as well.

    These didnt seem as common and I really like the wide fenders.

    Great tip, I need something that can fit someone of larger proportions (6' tall)

    Thanks Ed

    Another Question.

    To purchase and mod a Ford f1 vs a 1st series chevy, what one cost less $ generally speaking?

    I assume a chevy would cost less, also seems like there are tons of 1st series chevies around but much less f1's.

    What do you think?

    they all seem to cost about the same except for '56 fords, which are unique in that they have the fat fendered styling and a wraparound window.

    all have excellent reproduction support, especially the 53-6 fords and 47-55 chevs.

    it's really just a matter of picking which one you like best (but do yourself a favor and try sitting in a few... the 47-55 chevs have the biggest cabs of the group).

  12. ...here's one I just sold, 52 frame, box and rear fenders, 50 cab, hood, grille, and 48 front fenders. It's great how all this stuff interchanges. ...and P.S. ...I think these F-1's are as roomy inside as the Advance Design Chevys.

    Here is a pic of my 52 f1 w/chrome grill. These trucks are too cool and mine is roomy enough for me and my grandkids to cruise in. The F1 series ran 48-52 and are mostly interchangeable like the flathead motors.

    The hood on the black truck has had some major work done to it to get it fit like that. It looks like it got a little pancaking too. They fit like the red one's hood when stock.

    The hoods have a different louvers on the side after 1950.

    1948-1949 have a small back window. 1950 has same front clip as I understand it, but large back window until late in 1950. 1951 and up have a larger back window.

    The lower part of the front fenders and the core support are different in 1951.

    Good luck getting a glove box door and ash tray for ANY of them!

    They make everything for the 47-53/4 trucks. Repro front fenders, roof, cab sections.

    With that said, a Ford F1 is going to be a little harder to get parts for. They do make glass fenders for them but what's the fun in that? I see a lot less Fords than Chevy's.

    The little differences between them have been covered well - rear fender difference 48-50 and 51-52, front upper and lower fenders, grille, back window size.

    A key thing to look for if you're looking at a project is to make sure the fenders are F1 fenders, not F2. F1 fenders are unique to all other F series trucks and have smaller wheel openings.

    The big truck fenders are neat looking after a fashion. They have much larger wheel openings which gives a lowered vehicle an interesting look... and probably results in a lot less issues with the tires rubbing the fenders.

    I just bought a 51 4 weeks ago and don't know a lot about them yet but there are several parts that are not available for the 51/52 models that are available for the others. I have a bad door latch and they don't make reproductions for the 1 or 2. They also don't make the dash inserts where the radio and speakers were once located as these are also missing on my truck. Does anyone know if the door latch for the early trucks will fit the 51 other than the exterion lock plate?

    Nice to see all the pics of the trucks that are done. It helps me to toss in a few ideas on my 50 F-1. I picked it up cheap no motor. The floor is solidthough and good solid doors. Front front and griill needs help. Hoos is in good shape The drivers side front part of the cab sags and door won't close. The guy I bought it from took the doors off. After taking door off he had cut some more metal with a grinder. And a few welds, cuasing the sagging. Any ideas on this repair?

    Just sold my '40 coupe and '34 pickup so the next one to be tampered with is the '48 F1 (actually has a mixture of parts but the title says '48). I'm thinking one of Elpolacko's Dakota front ends and a narrowed 9". Probably do one of my big blocks and a 700r4. Damn the gas prices I'm 62 and still want to have some fun.:eek: :D

    I'm looking at a '50 right now. I have a complete ford drivetrain, but... not sure I can use the rearend I have.

    what is the width of the rear axle on these trucks?

    I'm not sure what the width measurement is. However, 57-72(I think) Ford truck 9in rears are a direct bolt it. Mines from a 69.
