pretty neat in the weeds find.
just throw some axles out in the weeds the county lawn mowers will run em over & twist em up with those industrial mowers.

Speedway Motors has a World's Fair axle on their wall (at least they did a few years ago). Maybe someone in Lincoln could go measure it to compare your's to. I'd guess your's is a World's Fair axle too though.

  5. Boy, that's a new one to me! I wonder if the rear axle was done like that, too?:D

Seriously though, I'd keep that piece like it is .... it's way too cool....

Ever heard of "X-ray" or "non destructive crack test" ?
Before putting my name to any car with one of those I would demand a legally binding disclaimer absolving me of all responsibility .
Sure Chrome vanadium steel is highly ductile and can be bent cold but don't think for one moment Ford would ever consider using one on a car because of stress induced fracture or the possiblity of it happening.

I've seen weeds do that to trees. They make walking sticks out of them. I never knew they could do that to steel though.

  13. there was an axle vendor at the Round-up that had one on display.

edit: saw that someone already mentioned it.
I wonder if they start with a wide truck axle and twist it down and then it fits a car or golf cart, dunno:rolleyes:

Yeah, I've heard that too. I've also seen connecting rods all bent up just like that.

  16. You always bend stuff like that at "room temperature", not heated. If you heat it, its almost impossible to get the entire axle to a uniform temperature, and all the twists will occur at the hottest spots, with very little twisting in the cooler areas. How do I know this??? Well, back when the earth was young, I made friggin MILES of wrought iron railing for handrails, room dividers, coffee tables---all that shit that your parents had in their houses in the late 1960's, early 1970's. I used to twist square 1018-1020 steel bars to get that "twisted" look on a machine I designed and built to do it.

  17. I have never seen a twisted axle but i have seen a twisted sister...;)

Is it possible that the top and bottom flanges were cut off the center beam and then twisted around the center beam and rewelded. The beam doesn't appear twisted to me.

I was the guy that twisted the axle for a display. It was a dropped 47 Ford axle. I had it at the Lonestar Roundup. I also have a Business Card holder with a dropped, shortened and twisted axle. I have sold several for displays. I drop the 1937-64 Ford and Chevy axles. Joe and I set up together. He drops the 28-36 Ford axles. I'm Nostalgia Sid's http://www.droppedaxles.com

There is a similar axle in the Bill Smith's collection at Speedway Motors. I saw it last fall.

There has to be a reason the previous owner threw it out into the weeds.
