Imagine 80,000 License Plate Collection

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Zapato, Aug 1, 2011.

  1. Yes really 80,000 plates. was talking to a friend yesterday and a family relation just passed away. And he had spent most of his life collecting plates and left behind over an 80,000 plate collection. Family is now trying to decide the future of the collection. They won't be trashed and yes they do have a good idea of current market value. If I find out anymore will follow up.

Can you imagine what plates he must have had. And where or where does one house that many plates? Since he searched worldwide for his collection wonder if they're cataloged?

And all I can say he must have had a very understanding wife.

Subscribed and interested to hear more.

PS: Ever notice how old license plates smell like BO? I have no idea why. Seriously, I may be overly sensitive but I can find boxes of plates in antique malls by literally sniffing them out. Maybe I am just crazy but imagine what 80,000 of these must smell like?!?!

  4. But they taste like chicken

A guy here in Central Florida keeps his in a warehouse and probably has that many himself. I'm sure part of the collection is cataloged, but most don't catalog common plates. Hell, I got around 100 and only catalog the 'keepers'.

  16. I know a collector in Belgium who estimates he has the third or fourth largest collection in Europe. I got my 1918 Belgium porcelain tag from him before my wife and I returned to the US in '92. Don't know if he has 80K of them or not, but his collection is massive!

I don't notice mine stinking either, but I definitely smell em in an antique mall. Get your nose down in a box and get a whiff!

Prices for good plates are rising fast as more states are allowing 'year of manufacture' to be registered to old cars.

Those things are worse than rabbits. I picked up a couple back in the 60s and now I have over 20000.

You never say this on the HAMB:

    Because then this always happens:

  23. A few years ago there was a guy at the Portland Swamp Meet that had torn down a barn covered with plates. I've never seen so many. I did pull a dozen or so out of his collection. They were $1 each regardless of condition or rarity.

  24. Here's a cool shot from 1938 in Mississippi

The years starting in 41 through 46 are had to find as most states quit making them, took a year and half to find a 41 AZ plate
