Killer Kustoms (up here in B.C.) posted an interesting episode on early VonDutch themed photos. If you’re interested go to YouTube and check it out...

I think people are Von Dutched out, after the sale of the name, bikes, clothes and what ever else. I would not put a flying eyeball on anything.

Von Dutch has gone the same way of the Shelby autograph [It is more rare if he didn't sign it]

The vid shows about 190 unpublished VD pics from his really early days. Nothing regarding the sell out times...

The couple alone turns me away from this video, but they are correct-I don't believe what they found!

Malcolm, thanks for that link. I never knew much about him growing up and never really considered him ( we had a local guy who was an esteemed pin stipend, “Boots”).

But I remembered the Boss's tale about a watch or something or other and realized he must have been a real prick! This link makes me think “prick” would be a compliment!

    Wish I’d never posted....

In my youth I too was fascinated about him,.. the whole HotRod Kustom Culture lore was swirling around his legacy. The artist, the stories the Culture.
Early Hotrodders went against the grain,. the whole unsafe at any speed thing.

Sorry. the more I found out about him..... the more I disliked him.....
    He is a dirtbag.

    Just like Gene Snow.

According to the internet the brand plans a comeback, the brand is worthless when people are educated.

I love asking young people I see wearing Von Dutch hats and t-shirts: "Oh, cool. Do you like Von Dutch too?" Every single time they say "Who?:

I met Dutch one time and it was a doozy! I had a friend, the late Al Hammersly, that had 40 Ford convertible. We went partners in to it to flip. Al couldn't part with it and bought me out. He built it as a period hot rod from the late 40s/early 50s. It had a 276 flathead in it, 37 DeSoto bumpers, and Cad sombrero hub caps. All of his life, he wanted a Von Dutch pinstripe job and the painter in San Diego knew where Dutch was. So, off we go to Buena Park and Movie World Cars of the Stars, where Dutch "worked". When we arrived, Dutch didn't want to talk to us. Seems that we lookd too clean cut and he thought we were IRS agents looking for him. Dutch never paid taxes and was always afraid the IRS would catch up with him. After a while he settled down and agreed to stripe the car. Except this was Saturday and he was going to "Tasmania", which was his way of saying that he planned to get falling down drunk. We hadn't planned on spending the night, but seeing as this was our only opportunity, we decided to stay. Dutch lightened up on us and wanted a ride. Al gave him a long ride up and down the Boulevard. Dutch particularly liked when Al would stand on the gas and then back of, causing smittys to bark loudly. He asked if we liked Chinese food and took us to a local Chinese restaurant. We should have known better because as soon as Dutch opened the door, the bouncer got right in his face and said, "Look you, I told you not to come back. After the last time!". Dutch apologized profusely and the guy backed down after we promised to keep him under control. Dutch decided to order for us and started ordering appetizers. After about 12 appetizers. He wanted order dinner for us. We convinced him that we were already stuffed and he backed down. We dropped Dutch and the car off and walked to a nearby motel for the night. We got up early Sunday morning and returned to Dutch. He did a beautiful job of striping the car, although he did give us a scare when he loaded his brush and started pulling a line from the back of the car towards the door when he suddenly stopped. Reloaded his brush and went to the hood and pulled a line back towards the door which joined the other line I. The middle of the door. He did that on other sides and Al and I could never see where the two lines interjected! Anyway after Dutch got done, he wouldn't take any money. He kept saying, "I don't want no money, I LIKE the car!". Finally Al just stuffed about $300 in Dutch's pocket and we hurried out of there before Dutch could react. Al has been gone for a long time now, but the car and the striping still exist. Just Google "Ol Wino" and see the car and Dutch's work. It somehow ended up in dealer in St. Louis and was sold from there. As I said. I only met Dutch once and it really was a doozy! I heard that Pat Ganhal was doing a book about Dutch and caught up with him at a show to relate the story to him. Unfortunately he was in final edit with publisher at the time. Pat did share one observation with me. He said, "you know all the stories you have heard about Dutch? "Well they are all true!". I own Pat's book and recommend it to all!

Phil Sauer the former owner of my merc told me a story about Von Dutch. He took the merc to Von Dutch to have it striped .He said it took all day to stripe, he would drink a little then stripe a little. This is of some his striping unfortunately the outside striping was lost after the accident and repaint and the glovebox went missing.[IMG][IMG]

I saw him several times hanging out at Betz Speed and Color in Orange Ca. in the late 70s-80s when I was buying paint.... IIRC he was drinking beer....
He wasnt anything special to me.. I just knew he was the dude that painted that ugly stuff on Stan's El Camino

Stan had over a dozen of Kenny's knives in his collection.
As far as the pickup, the right rear quarter panel that was painted like an aquarium was nice.

  25. I find some irony in the new found hatred of Von Dutch, I think it's a lot like Nickelback it's cool to hate them so everyone hates them!

There are far bigger dirtbags, and flat-out criminals who have done lengthy prison prison sentences who are worshiped as heroes or gods by some hot rod/racing culture!

Dale Earnhardt was the biggest dirt bag in the would there wasn't a speed/machine shop in North or South Carolina he didn't leave hanging for money!
He abandon two families his oldest son Kerry didn't even know Dale was his father and though his stepfather was his father!
It was only because Dale's mother Martha started going to Kerry's baseball games that Kerry learned who his father was and at that it wasn't until he got a drive's license and drove to Dale's garage that he met Dale!

He also abandon Kelly and Dale Jr. and their mother, and had very little to do with them!
It was only after the house that an 8 year Dale Jr. his sister Kelly and mom lived in was destroyed by a fire that Dale reentered Dale Jr. and Kelly' lives and went to live with he but were left to be raised by nannies!

Of course, my favorite was when Enine Irvan was approached about putting Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet on his Winston West car.
He did after a few races Irvan called and asked when he would be receiving the sponsorship money, and was told just having Dale Earnhardt's name on your car is getting you attention.

However, I bet most of the Von Dutch haters drink the Dale Earnhardt Kool-Aide!

  26. Nobody roughed up Dale on the track like he did to others. Only 25 posts re Von Dutch, most of us seem to be following the golden rule.
This thread's going to descend quickly. It's not about traditional hot rodding in any dimension.

First off no one, no one is perfect!
Second some actions or beliefs are not excepted in civil society. Racism and Nazism are some of those beliefs that are not tolerated in our society on the whole.
Third an individual has to determine where the line in the sand is so to speak. For many, a persons works doesn’t over rule their actions. That is Von Dutches art work is tainted by his beliefs and many people want nothing to do with Von Dutch’s stuff. There is a bridge between being a racist, rapist, murderer etc. and being a bad father, husband, businessman etc. It’s a degree of vileness. I don’t hate VD but I don’t like him either.
Oh Hitler was an artist also, but I damn sure don’t want his stuff hanging on my wall.

This thread wasn’t Godwined , if I understand correctly VD was a self proclaimed Nazi and Hitler follower.
