If the 97 is the cool 2BBL, what is the cool vintage 4BBL?

Just wondering, what were the best performing / coolest 4 barrel carbs used in post WWII rods / customs / racing, say thru the early 1960s? Gary

More or less the 4 barrel was introduced on new cars in the early 1950's.I believe Stromberg was first? Then the Carter WCFB,goofy looking Holley 4000,Rochester, and around 1957 the AFB and the Holley 4150 design .

WCFB no they did not come on this manifold.

One thing for damn sure it wasn't the modern Edelbrock carb with that big red neon sign saying this was not built in the 60s. If you want your car to look like an old gasser, get rid of theses signs. Just a pet peeve of mine. I had a thing for the Carter AFBs on the early 60s Chrysler engines and some Chevies but they did not have red advertising signs on them.:D Sorry sometimes I just can't help myself.:D

Perhaps there was a cool Weber 4BBL in the 50's? (before Edelbrock started to copy them?) Gary

  7. Tunning ease would be the Holley. I don't know as far as cool factor. I have always been a Holley man myself.

I also have a real soft spot for carter AFBs and WCFBs. I guess mostly everyone is going to say that the WCFB is the coolest.

Most of the fellas that have not grown up with WCFBs say that they are a bitch to tune. The cool factor goes right out the door if you can't make one work for ya.

Please forgive me for high jacking the thread but . . .

    Jon,
I got a Carter Competition Series sitting on my shelf, I guess its a souped up AFB. When did they produce those?

Beaner - there are two groups of carbs marked Carter Competition Series. The first are the true Carter Competition Series numbers 4758, 9, 60, 1, 2) These came out in the late 1960's. The second set, with numbers above 9000, are actually clones.

My first post in the thread was to list what was available.

"Cool" is in the eyes of the beholder.

"Best performing" is going to depend on the capability of the tuner.

Beaner - the 4759s is a 625 CFM manual choke. If you are short one of a pair, you need to revisit your old stomping grounds. ;) There is a hillbilly in Eldon that will trade carburetors for pictures of dead presidents in green frames. :D

Gary - should you decide to go further with your project:

Determine which carburetor make and type with which you (or your tuner) is comfortable. Then do the math!!! For best results, when migrating an original equipment carb from one application to another; the donor engine SHOULD be within 3 percent displacement of the donee engine. Thus if you have a 300 CID engine, 3 percent would be 9. You could use a donor carb from engines of 291~309 CID.

    Jon.

  16. I have some of those photos but I am out of toner for my printer. :D

Next time I have two nickles to rub together I'll have to make it down that way.

Dang, I always thought they were made in the USA under license from Weber. Not that Webers are not great carbs!

Thanx for all the tips and info guys... please keep'em coming! Gary

The 'best performing' would have to be the Autolite 4100.
Probably one of the very few carbs ever manufactured that comes close to atomizing the fuel.

Atomizing the fuel is what makes fuel injected engines more economical while producing more hp.

Due to it's simple uncluttered design, The 4100 was also an easy rebuild and virtually maintenance free, unlike the Holley, carter and Rottenchester carbs.

Autolite 4100's came in several cfm sizes, 480, 600 and a 670 cfm, all dating back as far as 1957/58.

The design of the 4100 was more or less the offshoot of taking 2 Autolite 2100 carbs and gluing them together. The Autolite 2100 2 barrel is/was known as a very economical and reliable 2 barrel.

    clean looking:

carbs don't get much simpler then this (holley should take notice):

Note the four annular discharge rings, that's what atomizes the fuel:

    Fits aluminum intakes:

Maybe not as cool sounding as "I gots a holley" but it'll make more hp and use less fuel while doing it.

Now THAT's an answer, ICW pix. Safe to assume these were Ford only carbs? Or not? Gary

    .

Yes, Ford used them on their performance based small blocks as well as on most all FE (352/390/428) engines both for performance/Police and for regular production engines from about 1960 to 69.

Easily found on ebay, -not so much so at pic n pull. -One hint would be to look for Big sedans with 390's in them.
(I buy my carb rebuild kits for $20 thru ebay)

4100 Service Manual is available on line:

Ponycarbs rebuilds and modifies them but they are pricey:

It's fairly easy to figure out what you have and what the cfm/size and application were by looking for the stamped numbers found behind the accelerator pump.

There will be a clock face with the primary venturi diameter number stamped inside of it.
1.08 (480cfm) and 1.12 (600cfm) are the norm, 1.19 inches is the 670 cfm (good luck in finding a 670!)

Just below that (on the mounting ear) is the actual part prefix (application/specifications number) which will tell you what engine and car the carb was designed for.

You can use the info (Below) and at this link to decipher the Part/Spec number:

  25. Real Carter afb's are a little different than an Edelbrock. The Original afb carbs came with either a drivers side OR passenger side fuel inlet,and were a bit small than the newer Eddies. The Edelbrock performers are based of the 9000 series Carters with mechanical secondaries and the Edelbrock thunder series is the later vacuum secondary version. Before Vic bought the patent rights to them, Weber did make them. They ran into financial trouble and sold the rights to him. Now Edelbrock is makeing them in the old tooling that still has Webers markings on it.{Only doing a better quality control job}

Greatly appreciate all the info you guys are posting. What do the Chevy, BPO / Caddy, and Mopar guys like the most? Other cool factory HiPo stuff like the Fords? No rush, just researching my options for the next build. Later, Gary

The dual wcfb's are nice! Like the glass bowl filters.

Real Carter AFB's, depending on original application came:

    (A) Fuel inlet pump side rear
    (B) Fuel inlet choke side rear
    (C) Fuel inlet front, choke side

    AND

CFM ratings from 400 to 939

I believe the clones range from 500 to 750 CFM

My dad has a Holley 4 barrel from a '57 Ford in the attic... you can't tell it apart from a traditional 4150 series. I think the 4150 was probably always the popular 4 barrel.
