While acknowledging that this is a conglomeration of styling cliches; it IS all Chevrolet. And it works at least as well as some of these '60s abortions that seem to be revered when, in fact, they were customised for the sake of customising and not in order to achieve some elevated styling theme. Even some of Barris's later work was nothing but a collection of mismatched bits and pieces which did little more than show off his skills at grafting, modifying, and molding.

Johnny would have rather sang the Folsom prison blues for life behind them bars than ride in that fuckin' abortion. It's like 10 different versions of a boyd's rod all piled into one smoldering pile of shit.

    We've seen this car before.

    And you gotta ask yourself,
    What Would Johnny Cash Do?

    He would not approve.

And then lightning bolts would sizzle out of his temples as the thunder of a thousand mountains falling into the sea rumbled forth from his gaping maw.

For those not up on their country music JC wrote a song about working in a Cadillac plant with a very large lunchbox. Every day he would take a part home and when asked about his car he would rattle off all the years it was.

I always thought that if he worked in a Ford plant and tried that shit he would have been really screwed when getting to the "bolt together" part. Even an a-dapter kit wouldnt have helped there.

Well, I left Kentucky back in '49
An' went to Detroit workin' on a 'sembly line
The first year they had me puttin' wheels on cadillacs

Every day I'd watch them beauties roll by
And sometimes I'd hang my head and cry
'Cause I always wanted me one that was long and black.

One day I devised myself a plan
That should be the envy of most any man
I'd sneak it out of there in a lunchbox in my hand
Now gettin' caught meant gettin' fired
But I figured I'd have it all by the time I retired
I'd have me a car worth at least a hundred grand.

    CHORUS
I'd get it one piece at a time
And it wouldn't cost me a dime
You'll know it's me when I come through your town
I'm gonna ride around in style
    I'm gonna drive everybody wild
'Cause I'll have the only one there is a round.

So the very next day when I punched in
With my big lunchbox and with help from my friends
I left that day with a lunch box full of gears
Now, I never considered myself a thief
GM wouldn't miss just one little piece
Especially if I strung it out over several years.

The first day I got me a fuel pump
And the next day I got me an engine and a trunk
Then I got me a transmission and all of the chrome
The little things I could get in my big lunchbox
Like nuts, an' bolts, and all four shocks
But the big stuff we snuck out in my buddy's mobile home.

Now, up to now my plan went all right
'Til we tried to put it all together one night
And that's when we noticed that something was definitely wrong.

    The transmission was a '53
And the motor turned out to be a '73
And when we tried to put in the bolts all the holes were gone.

So we drilled it out so that it would fit
And with a little bit of help with an A-daptor kit
We had that engine runnin' just like a song
Now the headlight' was another sight
We had two on the left and one on the right
But when we pulled out the switch all three of 'em come on.

The back end looked kinda funny too
But we put it together and when we got thru
Well, that's when we noticed that we only had one tail-fin
About that time my wife walked out
And I could see in her eyes that she had her doubts
But she opened the door and said "Honey, take me for a spin."

So we drove up town just to get the tags
And I headed her right on down main drag
I could hear everybody laughin' for blocks around
But up there at the court house they didn't laugh
'Cause to type it up it took the whole staff
And when they got through the title weighed sixty pounds.

    CHORUS
I got it one piece at a time
And it didn't cost me a dime
You'll know it's me when I come through your town
I'm gonna ride around in style
    I'm gonna drive everybody wild
'Cause I'll have the only one there is around.

    (Spoken) Ugh! Yow, RED RYDER
    This is the COTTON MOUTH
In the PSYCHO-BILLY CADILLAC Come on

Huh, This is the COTTON MOUTH
And negatory on the cost of this mow-chine there RED RYDER
You might say I went right up to the factory
And picked it up, it's cheaper that way
    Ugh!, what model is it?

    Well it's a 49, 50, 51, 52.........

Man I know that as it sits it ain't traditional, but that mutha is absolutely beautiful. I'd love to see it in person!!!! For you guys that only like stuff with primer or metalflake....squint and put on your favorite trad wheels and tires...paint it a more trad color. Yeah it's too pricey , But in the words of Larry the Cable Guy "I don't care who you are", That thing is stone stunning!!!!!!!

Kool title to this post. It will not surprize most of you but I love the car. If I
had the $$ I would buy it and be proud. The only thing that I would change is the front fender well. I think that it is too high and needs to be lower
below the chrome strip. Checkout my quicky photo shop. Also I would have to add white walls.

Kool post I was wanting to see more pictures of the car.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

To take the most highly recognizable features from those three years of Chevy and to make them work together in harmony is a amazing styling undertaking. I think they pulled it off rather well. Everything flows well and for the most part works.

The only thing is with the same amount of effort and money they could have come up with something totally their own, a statement that was unique, instead of cattering to the aging baby boomer (talkin' bout my generation) who is buying the "New" Mustangs, Chargers, Pt Cruisers, and all the other retro cruisers that US auto makers are putting out.

I like it for what it is, I wouldn't own it, even if I had the money.

Just plain ugly. Sure, looks like it was nicely built, but the wheelbase is too short and the windshield too far laid back. Doesn't matter that it's not a black '32 roadster, I still don't care for it. I also don't like "lambo" doors or 30" wheels either.

    Or these.

I'm not sure if I agree that they are working together in harmony. Being reasonably familiar with the 57, 58, & 59 Chevy stylings, I admit to having some pre-conceived notions as to what the shapes and proportions "should" be, so I'm having troouble looking at this from a purely design perspective. But it's all clashing to me. The cars changed so much those years (arguably more than any other 3 consecutive years in Chevy history), that it's just not matching up for me.

A successfull automotive design should take the whole package into account. Assembling several well-designed parts does not make for a cohesive well-designed whole.

Why does that remind me of that TV show...you know the one, that fat bearded guy and his sidekick. All I see is 3 car models ruined forever or until they go out of business.
