I found this and I'm not sure what it is off of...any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. It smells really bad too! LOL
If it smells like butt...then its soy based..I know Fords were big into that...I would guess Ford/Lincoln/Mercury..I am sure someone will tell you exactly what it is tomorrow...
I think it's Ford, too. But Chevrolet also made stinky steering wheels. I had a '49 Chevy with the accessory wheel, a beautiful wheel, by the way, but it stank like curdled milk. Took me a while to figure out where the smell was coming from. If it was from soy plastic, Chevy must have still been using it in 1949.
Lick it for taste .... does it also taste like butt? ... There you go! Is it easy to scratch? (Sorry, I couldnt resist!)
There are stinky early plastics that aren't soy-based. Many of the formaldehyded types are derived from stuff like sour milk and cow piss. A lot of these materials were developed quite some time ago. I'm wondering about the possibilities for making stuff out of them at a hobby scale now. Some links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galalith http://www.instructables.com/id/Homemade-Plastic/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urea-formaldehyde
maybe it was from someone who scratched there ass alot while driving, you wouldn't have a drivers seat to compare would you?
Ok, so Lincoln/Ford/Mercury? I've Googled tons of pics, still nothing. Is this an early accessory wheel? It's hard to say, but I'm guessing late 40's early 50's? Anyone else have any ideas? It has splines where the wheel mounts, not keyed like a 40 Ford wheel.
Splines is liable to be GM, and it looks plain like a base wheel. I'd look at like '40-'48 Chevy wheels and see if any are close.
can you flip it over and take a deadon shot of the center hub? Not exactly a dead on shot, its what I have for now. I will get a better shot tomorrow.
I'm pretty sure it's Ford/Lincoln/Mercury...it fits my 56 Ford F100 column. Weekend bump for what this wheel may have come off of.
If it smells like butt...I'm purty shure tis butt! No buts about it! Wait a minute! Am I to understand you said Fords are into smellin butts? isn't that considered off topic?
Then you can eliminate any Ford products 48 or older. This is a 53 Hudson wheel on a 56 F100 column. This is an optional 57 Mercury wheel on the same column. Your wheel looks like 40s to me. It could be an orphan wheel of some kind. You might check out Google images for 40s Hudson's and others. It's not a Ford product.
Thanks Tommy, I was not sure what year Ford started with splined steering column mounts. I gather 49 and up. Maybe other makes had splined ends earlier than Ford.
Concerning the smell, you might refer to the incredibly funny thread entitled "Vintage steering wheel smells like barf." I was in a very cranky mood some years ago until I read that thread. I'd guess truck on your wheel, except for the color.
I'll throw a guess in, it does look like a truck wheel. I'm thinking it looks like a 39 Ford wheel that I had years ago. Just a thought on the stank. I've had good results on early plastic radios and telephones that I have restored using TR3 resin glaze car wax. Some of those plastics smell, especially if you get them damp to clean them. The wax seems to clean fine and must do something like seal up the pores to improve the smell issue. Be sure to rub out a spot that will be out of sight first to make sure there's no chemical reaction first.
Reminds me of that Cheech & Chong bit: "What that?" "Look like dog shit." "Smell like dog shit?" "Mmm, smell like dog shit." "Taste." "Huh?" "Taaaaste!" "Taste like dog shit?" "Yuck, taste like dog shit." 'Ugh, good thing we no step in it."
