Traded a near mint Vox Buckinham piggy back amp with trolley for a new tent and a bunch of camping equipment. What a dumb ass I was! More to the point, I trusted my Dad with my Healey 100-6 when I went off to basic training... and he sold it about as fast as the screen door closed! Urrrrrrrrr to this day. Gary

Late 70's. Bought 57 Chev 2 door for $400, drove it for two years and sold it for $400. Breaking even was good on those old cars.

I mowed lawns all summer for a 58 Olds 98. They parked it because they got a new Caddie. It was 1970 and I was 14. It started right up and drove it home.
    Dad went sideways.
I sold it to a high school neighbor who still has it and drives it.
All he ever did to it was basic maintenance and consumables.

When I went into the service my Dad sold my '37 Ford coupe with a '55 Pontiac engine that I had in the garage. He did ask me and I said sell it. So I did have a part in the decision,,dumb, dumb, dumb.

I have quite a few, but the two I shouldn't have sold were a 55 chevy back in 1970 it was an old race and I still miss it, and the other was a 65 plymouth 2 door hard top satelite with a 426 wedge 4 speed all factory,

Sold a 57 Belair with 283 powerpack and channel seeker radio for $200.00 in 1970. A 69 Cyclone Super CJ in 1975 for $1,600.00 and a 68 Mustang fastback with a 390 4 speed for a cool grand in 79.

My all steel complete 32 Ford Cabriolet. Wow I wish I had that one back!

  10. Before I left Utah for Tahoe in 70, I sold a full fendered '32 Chevy 3 window with a nailhead. After I moved to So Cal from Tahoe I sold my '68 1/2 428 Cobra Jet fast back 4 speed Mustang that I bought with the money a girl friend gave me for my '68 327 Camaro.

I think thay may have made 12 sets for the V8-60. If you really want to know this one had a copper tag riveted to the valley with 1001 stamped on it, I was told it was in a Midget. Years later I found out it was put in a Midget by Duntov himself and he drove and won with the car. Not that would have any effect on the value of it..........Bob

An Offenhauser 6 deuce for SBC complete with 97's and linkage that I got from my dad. He got it back in his drag days in the 60's and didn't think it was worth anything because it was a pain to tune. I traded it for some parts about 15 years ago. I beg the swap meet guy is still laughing. Now that I have my Model A, I kick myself almost every day because it would be perfect on my hood less coupe. Yes, I am a dumbass. Dad thinks it's funny now (bless his heart).

Here's one with a happy ending.

Back in the mid 70's I stumbled on a 1937 Simca (exactly the same as a Topolino but made in France) at a farm equipment sale. It was only driven until 1952 when something broke in the engine and it was garaged all its life. No rust and straight metal with a clear title, and I got for only for $130 because it wasn't advertised, he just decided that morning to sell it at his father's farm equipment sale. $130 was a steal even way back then.

About 3 years later, I needed cash and sold it for $1200 to a friend of a friend.

Fast forward to 2011 at the Jalopy Showdown where I ran into the friend who set me up with the buyer. He asked if I remembered the Simca and I said hell yeah, the one I never should have sold!!! He then asked if I'd like to buy it back in exactly the same shape as it was when I sold it, because the buyer died without ever touching it and my friend got the job of selling off his projects for his widow. I held off for a couple months because I already had too many projects and I knew what would happen if I saw it. But eventually I had to go see it so it's now back in my garage for a bit over 4K and I'm happy to have it.

I'm currently gathering parts but there's a half done Henry J ahead of it on the list. Hope I stay healthy enough to build it and live long enough to drive it.

  17. My first mistake, was selling a 39 Ford Std coupe in 1959, the serial number for the car was 007. It was the 7th of that year built in Canada.
Nest, was my Olds powered 34 Ford 1/2 ton that I chopped, channelled, all in my back yard.
Then I sold my Buick pwrd 47 Chev coupe to get money to return to university. And the list goes on, a 190SL, 64 red Corvette coupe ( for which my wife still has not forgiven me (that's 44 years). My last sale I regret, was a 67 Toronado. It was just a great car to drive.
After that, I have sold nothing, and although I am being crowded out, I can live better this way. I hope to get my garage done this year and have some room to play again while I still have the health.

  18. Every vintage mag or aluminum Halibrand, ET or American wheel I've ever owned (in the neighborhood of 500 pairs!). 16x10 ETIIIs, 16x13 Halibrands, Hal spindlemounts, 12 spokes (15" and 18"), 15x14s, 16x8s, 18x9.5s (super rare Indy wheels), Kidneys or Small Windows, Solids, Big Windows, Sprints, Torq Thrusts, 16x10 S2 (2 piece mag Americans that look like 200S wheels), 16x10 Bearclaws, 5 spoke spindlemounts, MT Medallions, Internationals, 16x5, 6, 7 and 18x8 Indy Hals, etc. Many were NOS or very nicely preserved or restored. Never got much into steel wheels or slot-styles either but love the true vintage mag and aluminum stuff.

Like most everyone else here mine is a long list; but probably the two that come to mind first are the '38 Ford Std Coupe I had when I was 15. Traded it for a shortblock for my daily driver '46 Chevy PU. Tried for the next 28 years to buy it back. Finally got it back and ended up selling it a 2nd time...what's that they say about the 1st time being a mistake, but the 2nd time just stupidity?

Next was a cherry '34 Plymouth PE Couple built in the late 70's-early 80's with a 383 Chevy stroker and T-10 4 speed. Beautiful car and just right for the early hemi I've been hoarding for the last 20 years... dammit!

I've regretted selling both of these ever since they left the shop. Having kids will make you do dumb things

Selling my ot 1967 Mustang. One owner, v8, auto, super nice shape, low low miles. Sold it while living in San Francisco. Can't even remember why I sold it as I had a garage at the time, parking was not an issue. I know, its only a Mustang, but I have a soft spot for them. Wish I had it now to pass on to my kids.

I've owned over 200 cars since high school. At least 1/2 of them would be welcomed home with open arms. Life throws you many curve balls and a lot to them require a painful decision on what you keep and what you have to sell to survive. If I started listing the ones I let go you'd easily see they could have provided a very comfortable retirement.

  27. I would be a multimillionaire if I kept some of the stuff I sold. The most heartbreaking reality is it's likely to happen again and again.

  28. The 1956 Dodge Super Red Ram early hemi I pulled out of a running driver. It had 1800 miles on a rebuild.

Thanks everyone. I had a weak moment and advertised my '33 Willys coupe, a few weeks ago. Luckily, either the economy or Craigslist is dog-crap up here.

traded away a steel T bucket that was a Hot Rod in the 60's to a guy that I thought would build it since he had built other "T bucket" kind of Hot Rods. all the idiot did was part it out for pennies on the dollar. I'm sure I sold the 50 Chevy truck he traded me for more than he got out of the T. just about everything was there but the frame was weak and it had a 4 lug Mustang rear end and a 302/auto that did not really belong with it. in the end I did make money on the deal, but now I wish I had kept it.

how about a complete air cleaner to oil pan 1970 LT-1 350 all machined and unassembled with a B&M turbo 400 for $1200.00 around 1983. smog parts and everything, though it did have a different intake. nowadays the carburetor alone is probably worth half of that. probably get 5 g's for it now from a Vette weenie or a Z/28 guy.
